Tech Question: ticking from top of I-4 turbo motor
So we bought our '16 used with 19k miles 2 weeks ago. Smooth, runs great. We had an appointment with our classic car at a mechanic friend's shop Monday night (he's a licensed Subaru master mechanic). Anyway, he comes over to see the new vehicle, my wife's sitting in the running car as I was just dropping off the musclecar. He pops the hood, and the engine is ticking loudly. "Wow, that's loud, even for injectors", he says. He recommended we take it to the local Lexus service to listen and say if its normal for this engine or not before the warranty expires on the used vehicle. I'm taking it to Lexus tomorrow afternoon.
Is there a Lexus service tech on this board? Is it normal for this engine to tick? Runs smooth, extremely quiet (with the hood down ), doesn't smoke. The oil has been changed 3x in its life per the service records.

I checked out my NX200t and GS200t. Both have a similar clicking sound, probably injectors, maybe an aux air pump or just the valve train. I can't hear much with the hood closed but its a decent volume once the hood is open.
My last car was a pushrod cammed hemi V8 so these engines are delightfully quiet in comparison.
Can you post a video? Maybe a dumb question but is it low on oil?

I'll save you some time: If its under warranty, its fine. If its not under warranty, you need a new X, Y and Z.
I am assuming the engine cover is on there? I had mine off to change the plugs the other day and noticed it had what looked like sound absorbing foam. I'm sure the volume would increase a bit with that removed.

Just got back from the Lexus dealership. Service person met me, we fired up the car, popped the hood, he listened, said it sounded normal to him, the sound of the direct injection system. We then went over to another NX in the service area (not an h car), started it up, let it sit for 3-4 minutes. Popped the hood, same ticking from the engine.
Mystery solved . And it was complimentary! Cheap peace of mind.
Glad to be with you, Lexus.

ask for a mechanic, or at minimum, the service manager. And assuming you have warranty, have the visit documented.
