Murder suspect vehicle, asking for help to ID Lexus.
Hello, my name is Detective Jackson with the Austin Police Department’s Homicide Unit. We are currently investigating a murder that occurred on 09/16/2020 where a man was killed while sleeping at a bus stop. At this time we have no apparent motive for the senseless killing and no suspects identified. However, we have some footage of what we believe is a 2015-2020 Lexus NX (RX?) that seems to be involved in the murder. I am reaching out to the Lexus community in hopes that someone can help us narrow down a year/package/style/anything after market, etc that would help us narrow down this car. I am including video of the car below. I know the video quality is not the best and not up close, but any information will be helpful. Pics below, then videos at the bottom in zip files that are a little more clear.
Some things we have noticed that might help narrow it down. The rear blinkers seem to be yellow when flashing and red (not just red). The side view mirrors seem to have black on the bottom portion and not solid white. The videos are in .zip (the site would not let upload an MP4 vid). Thank you for taking a minute to look, and any information is appreciated!
Detective,
It does look like a Lexus NX. The wheels changed in 2018 and yours look more like the 2015-2017 wheels but it is hard to tell. Hope that helps.
Looking at the back window, it likely a Lexus NX along with the Lexus NX body lines. The RX would have a larger back door. The dark pictures aren't easy to tell 100%.
- All NX mirrors will be black at the bottom. That it's white on the upper part means it's not an F-Sport model. This is confirmed by the somewhat shark-y appearance of the front bumper on side profile.
- The wheels look bigger than the factory 18" size, though I can't say for sure. They might be aftermarket if so.
- Somewhat prominent fake vent on the front bumper's corners leads me to think it's one of the newer ones.
Wow - hard to get much detail from these videos. Enlarging doesn't really help because they are so grainy that enlarging almost makes it worse. I do agree that it appears to be an NX but the basic profile of the NX is so similar to an RX that I cannot be certain. However, the distance from the rear doors (really the windows since the doors aren't really well defined) to the back hatch seems to be fairly short - which suggests NX.
In terms of unique features - the front windows appear to be tinted. A factory NX will only have the rear passenger windows and back hatch window tinted, and this one looks like ALL windows are tinted. It is pretty common to tint the driver and front passenger windows so they all match - exactly what I have done with my NX. So unfortunately, while it isn't factory, it also isn't particularly unique. Sorry I can't be more help. Good luck with your investigation.
Detective, it's a base/standard NX200t (not an NX300h for hybrid-can only tell from the rear due to having no exhaust port/tip since it's a hybrid and a hybrid badge) due to the front chin tucking in.
An F-Sport version will have a squared off chin, not tucked in (along with different wheels and not available for hybrid).
Please see attached pictures to compare an NX vs. RX.
Good luck. Let us know if you have any more questions.
Here's one of many articles with more videos. I only watched one of them but it appears the suspect is walking along the road and somehow the white Lexus was involved (possibly picked him up?)
Were you guys able to nail down a year range? you can see the amber LED turn signals clearly flashing. i don't know what years had those as i don't follow this car that closely.
