Angry Check engine!

Hi there. Has anyone had problems with the check engine light going on & off? By the time I take it to dealer the next day the light is off so they can’t run the diagnostic test. However they just kept my car for a week then said it was oil control valve. They fixed it & sent me on my way. The very next day it was back on. They kept car for another week & called back & said I need a new motor 😱 car is 2015 with almost 122k miles. Does this sounds right??? They said or maybe since you have so many miles you want to just get a new car!!

I’d get a second opinion.

Thank you for replying! I most definitely will be getting a second opinion. I just have to wait for the light to come on again

CEL codes should be stored. I don’t think you need to wait for light.

Did they not provide you a copy of the service order? Everything they did to test the problem and the discovered findings should be on there.

I find it hard to believe the only information they provided was “New Engine Required”.

Oil sludge issue?
How was the oil change history on this vehicle?
I would try a series of multiple oil changes, or better yet , several engine flush procedures to see if it improves the situation, it definitely can’t make it worse.

Do you folks really think they drove the car 100 miles? And, that they saw no evidence of the "sludge" buildup during the entire test process? I am skeptical...

How often do you change your oil and with what type of oil? Do you tow? What gas octane do you used? These small turbo engines get hot, need to maintain it properly.

Based on the codes being generated they may of suspected it, but sludge is only confirmed by visual inspection. Most likely, they removed the valve cover and/or the oil pan and the ugly sludge beast presented itself.

Sounds like your car didn’t have regular oil changes. Do you have full service history? Bring a turbo, it will not last without very strict intervals on oil change.

One of the issues with some Lexus owners is that they mistakenly think that reliability means one could skip on maintenance or use oil and gas that are not properly rated. Oil sludge is usually cause by poor oil circulation, hot spots or using the wrong type of oil.
