Angry Road Noise

Was a bit disappointed after receiving my 2023 NX350h and listening to the road noise. At the time, dealers didn't have these in stock so I couldn't test drive. I figured it was a lexus and was expecting it to be as quite as the RX350. WRONG, the damn 350h sounds like a truck! We were fooled to believe production was cut back due to Covid, Lexus just thought of ways to make the NX350 cheaper and/or Lexus FORGOT to install any sound dampening materials in the NX. Thinking of spending some extra money to get some sound dampening materials installed. Curious if anyone has done this? if so, what material did you use? how much of the car did you cover? was it worth it? noise reduction?

I'm not smart enough to tear it all out then put it back. I've also never had it done after being told a few years back that it was expensive and not worth the cost. The end result is nice but the amount paid is crazy money. If you are able to do it yourself it is a long and tedious job, especially in the door cavities. There are shops that will do it, for a large fee.
Good luck.

The sound dampening material is actually decent in my opinion. I’d say 60% of the noise and ride quality comes from the run flat tires. Several people have complained about the run flat tires and changed them to Pirellis and noticed a big difference. Scroll down a bit in this section and you’ll see a thread about it.

Agree, I just picked my 450h+ up on Good Friday. It came stock with 20" Run Flats. I have plans to go with either the Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3 (requires a tire size change if 20") or the Michelin Cross Climate 2. I have started the search for the cheapest price.

I've been running Michelin XIce winter tires since I picked mine up on Valentines day. I too find it noisier than expected, so it isn't the tires specifically. Particularly bad on the highway. Been windy around here which also doesn't help. I have an appointment to bring it in next Tuesday, where they will be spending most of a day looking for noise. I understand they will be taping off certain areas, I presume around the doors and such then trying to see if that changes things. I'll give them the day to see what they come up with. Guess I was spoiled with my 2020 RX350.

I can understand why half of people hate the RFs and the other half say they are perfectly fine . I've found the RFs have a definite but not obnoxious road noise like you'd hear from an F150 or Jeep with offroad tires. The RFs make more like a Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, rather than the aforementioned Wawawawawawawawawawawa. But aside from the sound, they do run silky smooth. I will run them for the summer and see where things lie in the fall. I am also leaning towards the idea of the Cross Climate 2 tires as a 4 season tire (I've heard lots of good things about them, and have always been a Michelin fan), but man, they are super expensive around here. I could almost buy a set of winter and summer tires for what 1 set of these cost.

Default run flats run noisy

YES OMG, I did some research and thought about ditching the run flats as well. But then I'd have regular tires with no spares. Also found a local car audio store willing to put the sound dampening material using soundskins on the front half of the car for $1200. Guess that decent as others wanted $1500 -2000 for just the front half of the car. I might do the sound dampening and get rid of the run flats as well. Then perhaps it will feel/sound more like a luxury vehicle Where is that lexus survey?? as if someone with authority actually look at the dang thing.

Has anyone done a sound level reading on the highway? I’ve seen car reviewers on u tube reading the sound inside the cabin at 60-70 mph.

I test drove a 2023 NX 350 non f sport and took it on the interstate at 70 mph and it was very loud in the cabin. I was quite shocked at how loud it was, I know it had rft as I checked the cargo and lifted it up and no spare. Still I think it should have been a lot quieter, we’re talking a Lexus here not a cheaper name brand.

2023 NX 350h with run flats. Find the noise level find going from a 2017 ES300h. Don't notice much of any difference in noise than in my 2017 450h. Alex on Autos gave the 2023 NX350h an A- on cabin noise.

I used to have a sound meter but gave it to the church when I retired. I use the one I downloaded from the app store on my iPhone when I need it.

Having said that, I just sold my 2021 ES 300h Ultra Luxury to buy the 2023 NX 450h+. One of the things I was looking for when I started trying to get an NX 350h back in March 2022 was does it have the Soundproof Windshield. I was unable to find it anywhere on any website. That was the one thing I really liked about the 2021 ES 300h. It came with the Soundproof Windshield and it was the primary reason I went from the 2020 Toyota Avalon Hybrid to the ES 300h. Our granddaughter has a NX 200 and it is noisy as hell. So going into the NX we sort of expected the noise. As such, we haven't owned it a week and will be changing the tires shortly.

I agree with the above. This was my 1st "premium vehicle" purchase, and I am honestly very disappointed in the ride and noise from the Lexus. maybe my expectations were to high and I was hoping for a quite interior and floaty ride, which this NX350H luxury has neither of. At the end of the day, it's marginally better than the 21 Rav4 Prime I traded in to buy the NX/ contemplating getting rid of it after 6 weeks, pretty bummed out over the experience so far. I like the look and all the awesome tech, but the ride and cabin noise just might be a deal breaker.

In the 2022 Lexus pressroom bulletin for the new NX Lexus says this:

Inside, the 2022 NX provides a whisper-quiet refuge from the world outside with extensive noise dampening materials”

It would be cool if someone had the 1st gen and 2nd gen with a sound meter and could test the sound levels between the gens on the highway.

Agreed, the RF's are more noisy that my previous car. Contemplating replacing the RF's with https://www.michelinman.com/auto/tir...-crossclimate2 this would also entail purchasing a spare tire kit for road trips https://modernspare.com/product/2023...e-kit-options/ Wish if Lexus would have included the spare tire kit as replacing the RF's and adding the spare tire kit is another 2k of unnecessary spend.

Came from a 16 RX350. I have no sound issues with my NX350h. Maybe gunning it to get on a highway, or a steep hill climb it is louder, but 99% of the time, no issues. 18" wheels.
