Default Waze app not playing sound in CarPlay

Something very odd started happening a week or two ago. I use Waze every day and without (knowingly) changing any settings, the sound of Waze in CarPlay has gone away. Well, mostly gone away. When a new turn is coming up, it says "and then" but no other words. I restarted the app. I restarted my phone. I checked that the sound settings were on both my phone and CarPlay. Not sure what to check next!

I noticed the app apparently was updated recently. The display is different than it was, but for me it works fine. Took a few days to get used to how it looks now. Also discovered that I can put it into full screen mode by tapping the Waze icon on the left side of the screen. I use Stingray for music and that used to occupy about 1/3 of the screen. Now I can "hide" that behind the map.

Had an issue yesterday where my Samsung phone wouldn't connect, but that seems to have remedied itself as well. Had to plug it into the USB port today and that may have fixed that issue. You may want to try that yourself.

There seem to be plenty of glitches with this new generation of tech.

I ended up changing 2 things today and not sure which of them worked, but I'm working again! I went into Waze on my phone: Settings - Voice and Sound - and changed "play sound via" to "device default" and I updated the Waze voice to another voice.

I had a same problem couple days ago with waze and apple maps. For some reason lexus lowered volume in the settings of the car 2 times (maybe because I used HEY LEXUS when the carplay was on). Just go to lexus settings and change audio from low to medium or high.
