Fuel Tank Capacity
I’m not familiar with the 1st Gen NX but I googled how large the fuel tank was on a 2021 NX 300 and it says it was 15.9 gal.
The fuel tank on the 2nd Gen NX is 14.5 gal.
What was the design reason that Lexus went down in the fuel tank capacity? Was the extra cargo area under the trunk mat the reason the due tank size went down? Or did the 2021 also have that storage area too? Or was there other design elements on the 2nd Gen that forced them to reduce the size of the fuel tank? 14.5 is really small.

In the 1st gen NX, there was a spare tire under the trunk mat. So it's not like the space was use for the gas tank. Not sure what is the reasoning for the reduce tank size, but that 1.4 gallons would give you about 50 more miles of range if you were on the 350h, or less miles if you had the 350. Does it really impact the range that much?
For sure it means more trips to the gas station, but then the car is overall more efficient compared to the 1st gen. It's possible that they needed the room for the phev and it's battery so they changed the gas tank size to accommodate the same tank for all models?

I must say that I find the tank a bit small too. 😕 My previous SUV had 10 liters more. 💁♂️
In addition, I was surprised to see the low fuel warning come up when there is only 21km left; I’m used to get such a warning when there is around 100km left to drive. 😕

I wish mine were like yours
I still have 2.8 gallons ( 10.6) liters. I have the hybrid 350h and the gast tanks is sized right for the hybrid. But I agree with you , for the 350 , 14.5 gallons is a little small.
Good Luck. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas

You’re definitely going to be disappointed that you can really only use from the low light to pump shutoff of 10 gallons.

I wish mine came on around 21km ( 12.4 miles) . mine comes on at 175 km ( 108 miles). I had Lexus check and they said mine checked out normal and they could not adjust so when my DTE reads 0 ( goes blank). I was very displeased with Lethe Lexus corporate answer , but such is life.

Interesting. My 2022 350h also first displays the low fuel warning with 21 kms supposedly remaining though actual remaining distance is more like 50 kms. But this is a fairly new thing as previously the warning would occur at 60 - 70 kms remaining. Then one day it suddenly changed to a warning coming on with just 7 kms remaining and that distance counted down to zero in just 30 seconds of highway driving. Certainly made for a very nervous driving experience but when I filled the tank ASAP it turned out my driving distance to empty was actually about 50 kms at the time of warning. So something definitely went wrong there. Ever since then it comes on precisely with 21 kms remaining but the countdown to empty is at least normal again.

Funny that you all see the empty light that often. It's actually not good to use the tank all the way until you see the empty light that often. I just filled up last night after 3 months of keeping it at 2 bars. The Distance to empty was about 68km and no light on yet. Filled 38.9L, now estimating 782km of range, which the computer says 18.35km per L or 5.45L/100km.
But definitely when you think of the tank size of 55L, is there definitely 11L of room left with 68km range?

This would suggest a large reserve tank, which is a good thing. Life long toyota owner here, and in my experience is, they have been doing this for a long time.

350h NX -DTE range = 450 miles
reserve tank - 2.8 -3.0 gallons Gas tank size - 14,5 gallons useable (DTE Ha Ha ) = total -reserve 11.5 to 11.7 gallons @39mpg ( 350h) = 448.5 to 456.3 so ~ 450 miles
Not sure where the 10 gallon cut-off idea came from, but its not 10 gallons.

Only 450 miles? I thought I saw some up to 500 miles.

450 range explanation
Sorry, I wasn't clearer, on the NX 350h at rated 39 mpg you can go approximately 450 miles before your DTE goes to zero and your gas gauge shows no bars. At that point you are using your "reserve tank" which is approximately another 100 miles. Some people are getting better than the 39 mpg specified average which would also increase the range beyond 450 miles.
If you are aa very frugal driver hyper gliding gliding, drafting, coasting to a stop, keeping speed 55 or under, and run your tank completely down to fumes you could probably get 600 miles or more on a tank. Running to real empty however could cause engine damage or make it take a Lexus service technician to restart.
So the safe estimate without getting into the "reserve tank" is the 450 mile range. You do realize there is not a real, physically separate reserve tank.

P.S, - So with all the talk about using premium gas, I tried several tanks and got the same performance (I drive pretty east though) and the same mpg. The only difference was that each full fill-up lightened my wallet by about $15.00 ( here regular is $2.48 per gallon and premium is $3.98 per gallon)

@midcow3 , thanks for sharing your knowledge! Just to be clear, when the readout says, "0 miles to empty" or the like, we still have 2.8 -3.0 gallons in the tank?
Also:
"So with all the talk about using premium gas, I tried several tanks and got the same performance (I drive pretty east though) and the same mpg."
Are you sticking with regular (87)? Top Tier or any brand?
Thanks!
