Lightbulb K.I.S.S. - Possible Circumvention /Solution

K.I.S.S. - Keep It Simple S.
From an Engineering and Problem Solving Perspective.

Identify the problems:
(1) Memory settings don't always work
(2) Multiple profiles don't work

Lexus over complicated the environment with too many options and devices:
(1) Two Key Fobs.
(2) Phone App for iPhone
(3) Phone App for Android
(4) Smart Access Card Key
(5) Lexus Digital Car Key

Apparently, Lexus did Unit testing on each of the memory setting/infotainment devices but did not perform Integrated functional and make-break testing. Each of these options and devices was unit tested by a separate Lexus team, but there was no testing when multiple options/accessories were present at the same time.

Not all the options devices have the same parameters and the same control scope, but there is obvious overlap. When there are multiple devices, which device connects first, which device overrides another, etc. This is why sometimes your device works and sometimes it doesn't

The circumvention, today is to choose which option /device is the primary way you want to operate your NX and set that particular device up and use it only. You should leave your other devices/options at home or not enable them. One way to temporarily disable electronic devices is to put them in a Faraday sleeve. A Faraday sleeve is simply a metal envelop that blocks the device inside from sending and receiving electronic signals. Faraday sleeves are inexpensive or you can make a temporary one out of aluminum foil.

For right now, A good circumvention would be to use one of your key fobs ( keep the other away until Lexus fixes the problem see further down), and if you want to have your Smart Access Cark key and/or Lexus Digital Car key with you, put them in a Faraday sleeve.

If you really like the way your Smart Access Card key works, make it your primary and put your key fob abd Digital Car Key in a Faraday sleeve. That way you still have them as a backup if needed.

As far as the profile problem, apparently Lexus did not even unit test this. Use only one profile and only one key until Lexus fixes the problem. It appears Lexus signed off on the unit testing after a single profile worked. So a single profile or the guest profile is all that is going to work until Lexus fixes this.

Lexus Fix
Sometime in the future, hopefully near future Lexus will issue a software update. This update will probably add an option to specify what is the default primary access on your car to your memory /infotainment and also set the correct precedence if the primary does not exist. Possibly it will be interactive, e.g. "You Primary Smart Key Access was not detected would you like to use Key Fob?"

Lexus also needs to address the multiple profile issue; This will be another software update so that Lexus can properly handle more than one profile.

These are my thoughts and are meant to help. Keep It Simple S. and make it work now. Lexus unnecessarily complicated the issue without testing all the possible combinations and outcomes.

YMMV,

MODERATOR EDIT: Peterun, exit this thread.

I asked in the past thread with the conflict that personal comments cease, and you carrying them forward to another thread is an absolute non-starter. Be better or do not post.

OP, interesting info. I'm curious if that is all based on your personal experience only or if there is evidence that it's product-wide? Not asking that to minimize your post, rather more so curious if I should expect the exact same results when I get my NX next week. In other words, is it a foregone conclusion? We are getting a 350h Premium and 1 of our must haves was the memory seats due to there being a 16" difference in height between me and my wife. But one of the options that is also on the car is the smart key, digital key, which we have researched and they seem nice but not sure we would use them that much. Sounds like you are suggesting to not even bother to set those up unless we want them to be our primary devices? We tend to K.I.S.S. in general, in that we usually use 1 FOB regardless of who is driving the car at any time. So, it can be a pain if memory settings are tied to a FOB. Our last vehicle with memory seats was that way and every time I would enter the vehicle with the FOB, the seat would adjust to my wife's settings and I'd have to quickly push buttons to change it to my memory settings before I was crushed like a beer can. Ideally, for us, we'd like to be able to save our respective memory settings and then, depending on who opens the driver door to get in, we push the button for that driver and everything stays there until manually changed via another button for the other driver. Not sure that's a realistic expectation and I will rarely be the driver, anyway, unless we are taking a long road trip.

@VillageNX - By now Lexus is aware of the issues and is working on resolving the problems. I think the issue is product wide, NX and RAV4 and maybe even other Toyota/Lexus vehicles. However, I have strong confidence that Toyota/Lexus will have a permanent solution soon and these issues should not deter you potential NX purchase.

YMMV,

Another thread mentioned the new Tundra is having similar challenges - so yes, I’m sure this is receiving a great deal of attention.

As for placing the key fobs in a faraday cage, be advised that the keys could be put to sleep in some of the Lexus models I have owned. I don’t know the exact procedure but I think it involved pressing and holding two buttons simultaneously. Then just press any key to wake it. This was a discussion from a thread where there was a concern that the keyfob was being stored too close to the car and it was running the battery down. Pressing any key would “wake” it. You may want to check with your dealer’s tech specialist to see if such a technique is available for this model rather than a faraday cage?

This is a brand new infotainment system and the system that many future Toyota and Lexus products will use. Toyota is certainly aware of these issues and will want to address them. Fortunately for us these fixes can be delivered over the air and doesn’t require a dealer visit. While these profile issues are inconvenient, I not worried that this will be a long term or unfixable issue.

And yes, there is a battery saving mode which stops the fob from sending radio transmissions.

Page 106 -

When battery-saving mode is set, battery depletion is minimized by stopping the electronic key from receiving radio waves.

While pressing and holding lock on the electronic key, press unlock twice. The indicator on the electronic key will flash 4 times and battery-saving mode will be entered.

The smart access system with push-button start cannot be used while the electronic key is in battery-saving mode. Battery saving mode can be cancelled by pressing any switch on the electronic key.
