I've always done oil changes at 5K (I alternate between dealers & DIY to maintain the warranty). I've watched several of the Toyota guy's videos & he seems to know what he's talking about. However, I googled "Toyota oil consumption problems with 10K interval" and could only find hits to forums debating this issue. Car & Driver says go with your recommended interval or one year. Maybe this guy's just trying to drum up business for his new shop...

If you Google oil change interval for synthetic oil you will see where Consumer Reports, Road & Track, Bob the Oil Guy and so on will recommend 7,500 to 10,000 miles. If you are using a good snythetic like Mobil 1 etc 10,000 is fine. I have used 10,000 for our oil changes for well over one million miles of drving and of course have had zero engine problems.

I'm a little late to this discussion, but yesterday the local Lexus dealer (Lexus of Omaha) told me an oil and filter change would be $120 plus tax. Ouch.
I traded in a Subaru for my 2024 RX350h. One thing I really liked about the Subaru was the oil filter was on top of the engine and easy to access. I installed a Fumoto oil drain valve that I could reach from the front without putting the Subaru on ramps. Total change took 30 minutes and was super easy. Now I'm back to putting the Lexus on ramps to gain access to the drain valve and filter. A step backwards in my opinion.

Default PPM Worthiness

Probably my quick story will help. I paid for the prepaid maintenance plan and was researching non-stop for the last couple of days to find out whether I got ripped off or is it a good deal. When I bought my 2024 NX 350h back in September-2023, I paid an amount of $2580 for prepaid maintenance up to 50,000 miles (basically 8 services since first two are free). So, I was reading through the threads about the PPM worthiness and was not able to come to a satisfactory conclusion. So I called couple of dealers nearby where I live (Orange County) and started asking how much is the service cost for the intervals up to 50,000 miles. I felt really happy about how much I paid when I got the quote from the dealer I called (total was whooping $4180 for 8services). The lady on the phone immediately mentioned to me that I have the PPM already paid for and I don't have to pay anything out of pocket. But I mentioned to her that that's exactly why I am calling because I want to compare the cost to what I paid for. I felt happy right but I realized if I call from my number they'll know that I have prepaid maintenance plan and this time I called the service dealer I paid at to get the quote from them so I am comparing apples-to-apples because the rates vary depending on the location and dealer. When I got the quote from my dealer service center, the total was $2301 which means the financing guy at the time of purchase has included approx 12% profit in that. Hey Cmon! ultimately it is business and for us to not get screwed over, we need to know what we are paying for but anyways coming back to the service quotes, since the guy was going over the pricing on the phone, I don't remember the exact break-down of the cost per individual service but I can confidently say below are numbers he went over (prices include tax, labor & any fee).

15k - $145

20k - $258

25k - $130

30k - $700 (major service)

35k - $130

40k - $258

45k - $422

50k - $258

To arrive at a reasonable conclusion. Prepaid maintenance plans are,

TOTALLY WORTH IT:

If you are planing on going to Lexus premium dealers with high rated service since the prepaid maintenance plans work at any dealer.

If you don't want to do your oil changes or want to go for local mechanics.

If you don't want to spend time on learning to do your maintenance.

The prepaid maintenance plans also come with 24/7 roadside assistance.

OH BTW, one dealer quoted $1100 for the 30,000 mile service alone.

NOT WORTH IT:

If you think you are paying more.

If you know how much the actual cost of each package is at each & individual dealer and provided you know who offers the cheapest one. The gamble is what if the cheapest one is bad in terms of service and quality.

If you are not plaining on keeping the vehicle longer or leasing the vehicle.

HOPE THIS LONG POST CAN HELP PEOPLE DECIDE BETTER.

PS: I still regret paying 12% more and thinking of canceling it. I guess we are human after all. LOL

I recently looked thru the supplemental Lexus Warranty & Services Guide to see at each service point (each 5K) what was recommended, which required the mechanic to actually do something (ie. Fluid change). If you exclude the ‘inspections’, rotating tires (I’ll get that free at Discount Tire, when I get my first replacement set), cabin filter replacement (easy DYI), and you don’t drive on dirty/ dusty roads, here’s what Lexus says:

10K Oil Change. 15K Tighten Axle Bolts. 20K Oil, Clean High Voltage Battery Filter. 30K Oil, Change Brake Fluid, Change Air Filter, Axle Bolts. 40K Oil, HV Filter. 45K Axle Bolts. 50K Oil. 60K Oil, Brake Fluid, Air Filter, Axle Bolts, HV Filter. 75K Axle Bolts. 80K Oil, HV Filter. 90K Oil, Brake Fluid, Air Filter, Axle Bolts. 100K Oil, Engine Coolant, HV Filter. The pattern continues, except at 150K Engine Coolant and Inverter Coolant are changed.

The recommendations are almost exact as the last 3 Toyotas/Lexus I’ve owned: Every 10K, change Oil. Every 15K, tighten axle bolts. Every 20K, Clean HV Battery filter. Every 30K, Change Brake Fluid & Air Filter. 100k, new antifreeze.

I’m shocked to see the prices that dealerships charge for what is minimal service. For me, I’m going to continue to get the $100+ oil changes at the dealer, and have them tighten the axle bolts at every other oil change (every 20K). I did this with my 16’ RX350, and the dealer I traded it to sold it as a Lexus certified used (with 70K).

Got a quote for my 20k service from the dealer: $459!
The advisor couldn't explain to me what was included in that cost other than an oil change and air filter change.
Anybody care to share what they are paying for the 20k service?

I'll be needing my 20K this summer. I'll only have the dealer do the oil change. I'll have the tires rotated at a tire place, and remove and vacuum the hybrid battery filter with my Shopvac. $459 for about 40 min of work; geez...

$95 Broken down as such:
$25 in oil after an offer from Pennzoil
$40 in labor and oil filter at my Toyota dealer
$30 for the cabin filter and I do it myself.

Exactly what I do. Oil and tire rotation every 10,000 miles. Brake fluid changed at 30,000 miles. Change cabin and air filter once a year $40 for both five minutes to do both.
