If it looks like a plastic film then is a covering that the dealer should have removed when they prepped the car. Pull it off then head to Amazon and get a protector like you probably have on your phone. Ans get used to it always being dusty along with all the other shiny black trim.

When we bought ours (haven't installed it yet) there was one manufacturer that send a couple suction cup things to help you install it. That's the one I bought, thinking I'd need all the help I could get not to screw it up.

I see no harm in leaving it on until it annoys you from being too scratched up (i.e. it protects the screen, and no point in removing it just to place another screen protector over it if it stays in good condition).
I've left films like this on cell phones for years and it was way more accurately placed than any screen protector I place myself.

Why is a screen protector even needed? Fingers won't scratch the screen, and there's no risk of dropping. I think it will take a very deliberate effort to scratch the glass.

I thought that too. But I've noticed that the screen looks scratched, I assume from my wife frequently wiping the dust off of it - we all know how badly all the shiny black plastic show dust. We don't use the screen for anything else and keep it turned off. I'm questioning that the screen is really glass and not a soft plastic.

Hmm . . . if it’s plastic and not glass, then a screen protector would be prudent!

He meant you can just remove the protective thing from the screen and just use the glass.
