Default Check Engine

Had my first ever check engine light on a Toyota/Lexus product today. Although we live several hours away from the dealership, our one month old NX350H decided to throw a code while we were a few miles away from the Lexus dealership while in town. The tech indicated it was a loose gas cap. I’m having a hard time understanding this as the last time I filled up was 10 days ago and I always tighten for one click. I’m curious to see if anyone else has experienced this issue. The tank was a quarter full and we did experience a change in elevation of around 5000’. Not sure if any of those factors played in.

There is always a chance for defective new product. Just tell them to give you a new gas cap if CEL keeps repeating.

The tech has little choice but to go by the stored code(s). Maybe do two clicks on the gas cap? I usually do 2-3.

Yep, the first CEL I ever got on a Toyota/Lexus was when the gas cap on my '04 RX failed. It was about 8 years old at the time so I just bought a generic replacement at NAPA and went on my way. Obviously they should give you a factory original new one if that's the problem here.

Had a fill up and so far all good in terms of check engine light. I left our home (elevation 4000') with a bit less than half a tank. The pass we take is just under 9,000' and went to Reno, which is 4500' with a quarter tank remaining upon arrival. The following morning was very cold when the issue occurred, so I'm really wondering if this may have played a role. Something I'll be watching in the future.
