Default Water pump/timing belt Q.

Hello Everyone! The water pump is need of replacing for my '93 Sc3oo. Can the water pump be changed out by itself without changing the timing belt?

Yes you can, but the reason it's recommended to change both at the same time is because it's a labor intensive task and as an interference engine it's best to change both pieces simultaneously as preventative maintenance.

hey there,

I did mine on my 93 sc300 about 1.5 years ago and you have to at least take off the timing belt to remove and replace water pump. Do you technically have to replace it? No, but you have to remove it to get the water pump out.

And my understanding is you NEVER stress a timing belt twice by installing it a second time after it has been removed to do other work no matter how few or many miles it has on it. I know some have been lucky but not me I am not taking that chance. Look how cheap they are and to me that is cheap insurance.

Appreciate the info. I purchased an OEM kit for this reason. Is the valve cover gasket replaced when doing this job?

Unless you change the cam seals. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
Good luck and watch your timing marks

I don't know Bill, I pull them off and reuse regularly on the race car. I can't see a reason just removing and reinstalling would hurt, but you may be on to something. Just look at the belt, make sure it is in good condition, make sure it is a good brand belt of course, but if all is ok I would use it in a heartbeat. Not to say you shouldn't regularly replace them, but if I had just put it on within the last year I personally would have no issue.
