Default Air cleaner assembly confusion

So, I have to get an OEM airbox to pass smog on my 97 sc300, so I bought one off ebay. When I installed it it made my check engine light come on and I was puffing black smoke, Apparently it was for the vvti version of the 2JZ and the maf sensors are different. I took it off and reinstalled the aftermarket filter that came with the car and it’s running fine now. My question is does anyone know what air box I need or how I can pass smog. Links are very much appreciated.

Hmm... yes the sensors are different. I believe there were three different MAF revisions: 1992-1994 (Karman-Vortex type using a small internal mirror that you CANNOT ever clean), 1995-1997, and finally 1998-2000 for the VVT-i models.

Looking ar your original MAF I think you will need one of these:

You can see how it looks different from the 98-00 version you installed. The 95-97 SC300 version's connection to the round MAF unit looks very similar to (but is NOT the same as) the MAF unit found on Supra MKIV Twin Turbos.
