Default Various (small??) problems ...

Hey all,

Could use some help on some problems I have with my '93 SC4:

1. This is actually something I noticed about a year ago. I since had my tranny reworked and the TC replaced with one from Precision Industries, but that didn't change anything. The problem is some kind of "jerking" or hesitation under low or no power. It's hard to describe, but it kind of feels like if you let a manual "glide" on flat terrain at no power ... know what I mean?

2. The other problem is some very noticable vibration and a feeling as if the parking brake was engaged. This is only present at approx. 1000 - 1600rpm during the first 20 - 30 mins. It isn't there when the car is warm. I might be wrong, but I recently changed my suspension (shocks & springs) to Supra TT's, and this appears to have improved this a lot, although it's still noticable.

I recently had my car serviced by a Lexus dealership and I pointed out those 2 issues. When I picked it up again, they told me that they couldn't find anything ... maybe I'm just paranoid.

Any of this make any sense or ring a bell?

Thanks,
Diego

You might try changing your transmission fluid.
If you have Dextron Type II it can cause vibrations in your tranny.
Flush the whole system and change your trans fluid to Toyoto Type IV.
I had a similar problem, installed the Toyota Trans fluid and the vibrations went away.

You could be dead on about the mounts.
I also changed out both my engine mounts and my trans mout at the same time I had the torque converter and the trans fluid changed.

The engine mounts go at about 90,000 miles and the trans mount about the same time.

My engine mounts were both really bad, one of them was split in half and the other was about 3/4 gone.

The trans mount was still intact but very soft and spongee.

This was on an SC400 with 150,000 KM (about 95,000 Miles)

You did use T-IV ATF, right?

The UZZ30/31 Tranny (very similiar to the MKIV TT Auto) likes it T-IV and nothing else.

Edit: I saw you said KM, and figured you were down under... you're in canada so UZZ30 = SC400

Default Trans Fluid

Yes I changed over to Toyota Type IV Fluid.
If you use any other trans fluid in an SC 400 it creates problems, mainly vibrations.

Thanks for the replies.

I pointed out to the tranny shop that I wanted nothing else but Toyota Type IV in there. They assured me that that's what they used when I picked it up. Whatever, I guess I just flush and refill again just to make sure.

I also thought about engine / tranny mounts. Is replacing the mounts something that requires a rocket scientist or could I do it myself? Maybe there's a step-by-step DIY somewhere?

Default Replacing Mounts

Tranny Mount is quite easy.

Engine mounts are a little tricky, you really need a hoist to do the engine mounts.
