I can't really describe the sound but it sounds great (Decently loud and significantly deeper rumble)!! It sounds very different than my 1993 SC400 with no cats. It sounds a lot more exotic. I guess I should say it sounds like a Toyota V8 . It's still quiet at highway speeds but you will defiantely be heard when taking off.
Here is the pic of the final exhaust setup(for now ). Notice there is MUCH less restriction than stock. The 1UZ is much happier now. It can now breathe

OneHOT is right! Mufflers do not and should not affect your emissions. Your cats are the primary factor in determining your emissions...well maybe a crappy motor (but that is pretty much unheard of with our cars ).

It would be significantly louder. I would try keeping the cats and running a true dual setup similar to mine. I suggest Magnaflow or Dynomax mufflers. The Dyno's seem to be a little better quality and have a little more "flow". You can always remove your cats if you can get away with it (and you don't have OBD-II; 1996-up). Good luck and keep us posted.

UpInTheLex,
I have a question about your sig. What is the //M version of a lexus? Are you going to swap a BMW engine into your SC?
As for me, I am building the AMG version of my sc400 that Lexus never built.

Ok cool, AMG, great, have it your way dude.
I mean like there is no sc400 L-tuned or a higher model designation. My car has TT supra Suspension, Brakes, Wheels,LSD Diff. Exhuast is done now, and I need to install the 2800 converter. So i mean it like that.
The exhuast sounds really great. I got the whole thing done for 190. It's the perfect amount of loud/quiet. The car doens't hesitate as much and I had the trac light come on between a WOT 1st to 2nd gear change, which is new. I highly recommend this mod to anyone, especially cali 3rd cat peeps. So thanks to Livessc400 for giving me the inspiration and taking the big first step.

I just redid my exhaust! Yesterday, I decided to remove my mufflers (bad decision ) and install 3.5" oval tips on my car. Well I was disappointed with the results. My car sounded like a drag Mustang with straight pipes. It was the loudest thing I have ever heard. Judging by the results, I have concluded that the SC400 mufflers are NOT straight-thru and are very good at muffling sound. Well I went back to a local exhaust shop today and had two universal Dynomax turbo mufflers installed and WOW! The perfect sound and power combination for my taste . Acceleration is smooth and quicker in the mid to high RPM band. The exhaust note is a deep V8 sound that get's you noticed but will not annoy the ***** out of you when driving. Definately beefier , smoother, and about 20% louder than when I used the stock mufflers. I also tested the MPG on my trip computer and I am averaging about 19-20 mpg city and I drove 15 miles on the freeway averaging about 26-27mpg. I will try to take some pics and post them soon.
