The whole idea about that air scoop, that directs air flow from the center of the bumper into your air box is to create a more effective air pressure environment for the cold air to flow into your air filter (as Seismic mentioned)...by just leaving it open to airflow that is being sucked in from the slots under your headlamp, too much air is being forced into the air filter, and you will not get the maxium effect of the entire BFI project. I'm sure there is more air flow than the stock snorkel, but your missing out on a lot by not having the air 'directed' into your air filter...but hey, it's your ride, so do what makes u happy...these are all just suggestions (well, with tests and results to back them up...)
Anyways, how does she feel with the snorkel remved?

In terms of performance, it's too hard to tell. I "think" it has more low end torque but maybe it's just the new grunt that the intake makes now (the impression that it gives).
And as for the shield, I dunno about that. I can't see why anyone would rather suck up air from the corner vs straight from the front. I'll probably take off the headlamp again this weekend (if I don't get too lazy) and fabricate a snorkel leading from the hole next to the foglamp STRAIGHT to the intake. Just my 2cents.
