Just got done doing this for mine, so much better. The dumb-nut that had the car before me looks like they also tried to do this but they left the broken bottom piece in the transmission. I am surprised that it shifted at all. I replaced mine with the parts from Marlin Crawler
Pt# MCTM-532 HD shift lever socket
Pt#MCTM-522 (white) shift lever ball seat
all for 27.98 with shipping.
Great and cheap upgrade.

I just installed a short shifter on my 95 and the throws are better but there is still a lot of play in the shifter itself either in neutral or in gear. Does the tranny have to be dropped or opened up to replace the bushings for the linkage? Any replies would help.

Nope, it can all be accessed from the comforts of the driver's seat (as shown right back there in the pictures ).

If you've read the thread, you'll know that 92-94 w58 is different from 95-97. Therefore, only 92-94 transmission can be fixed using this method. Unfortunately for us 95-97 manual SC300 owners, the transmission has to be dropped and opened.

Oh snap! My bad, I thought it was inclusive through 95.

Thanks for the correction

I got mine in today, I ordered the Marlin Crawler ones but I cant get the shifter back in the hole with the white bushing on top of the hole.

Where exactly does the white bushing go? If you put it on top of the hole the shifter doesnt sit correctly because of the two nothes on the side in the hole and shifter. I didnt have the old bushing in there, its no where to be seen.

Lol at the ball seat dangling on the shifter. You have to get it underneath the two cylinders that protrude from the sides.

Just finished installing the marlin crawler kit, and WOW what a difference! The shifter will not budge now in gear, solid as can be.

Definitely a noticeable inexpensive mod. The shifter pivots off the large round plastic cut that goes in the shifter housing. So when that deteriorates, the shifter moves all around in the base making the shifts feel "loose". The marlin crawler kit is made our of delrin it looks like and is kind of a pain to get install (really tight fit) but it looks as if it will last longer.
