Whether you keep your stock bottom end or not you will want stand alone regardless. The thing of it is you lose margin for error with the weaker bottom end... It may hold 400 or 500 RWHP, but at that point a very minor issue can cause very major problems. If you pop a bottom end and have to replace it it will cost you much more than just swapping in a TT shortblock to begin with.

You would most likely have to redo some of the head including valves, possibly replace the back side of the turbo from metal pieces going through it, etc., etc.

The TT shortblock is not going to make it bulletproof or anything, but it raises the margin for error to where if you do have a problem there is a better chance of it not being catastrophic.

lol... honesty is the best policy, and the world of NA-T's isn't all roses

If I really wanted to scare him I would just post the $$ amount I lost trying to keep my last SC running. lol

but ebanks basically if I only wanted a turbo to run 5 or 6psi... it would be a good idea but not neccesary to swap the bottom..

anyone know where to get a tt shortblock priced priced??

yep... Not required, but definately a good idea. You can get a bottom end brand new from toyota assembled and ready to rock for @$2k.

If you really want one I would suggest ordering from Elmhurst Toyota. They check the tolerances for the factory crankwalk issue when they get them in and before they ship them out I believe, and they have unbeatable pricing. Talk with Curt or Dan, but good guys.

Looks like Ethan's got you covered. My biggest piece of advice on the VVT-i motor would be to not run a piggyback. Long term fuel correction and all that, easier to just use a standalone to run the motor and use the factory ecu for VVT-i control. If you're only looking for a 5lb kit you can do it for very reasonable money and have a real nice daily driver.
