Default What to do 1jz swap for 99 sc 300

Thinking of doing the 1jz swap on my 99 sc, read some things online, what year will work with the least amount of hassle? Do in need the vvti motor from japan, ie single turbo model? Or Can i use the older less expensive model? Will the wiring be any more diffucult using the older model?

My goals are modest performance, probably would leavee it stock for a while, then slightly mod it to go into the 12s. Would like a daily driver, good gas mileage, i have heard people getting 25mpg with this setup? Not sure if you could get that good of gas mileage with an auto setup or would you need the manual? Any input would help from anyone who has done a similiar swap.

Thanks

I say go for the 1jz vvti model engine. Newer car newer motor. A member on here, vududoc has done a 1jz vvti manual in his 92 sc. Do a little search and you should find it.

OBD1-2 has to do just with the ECU i think?? The body plugs should be the same, or not much harder to make work with a bit of diagram reading and wire switching.

Id say go with the VVTi single turbo, new car + new motor = FTW

Default swap

my car is an auto, the vvti motors i have found are also autos, was thinking of doing a 5speed to get better mpg etc. I know it sounds funny, but if you can have the best of both worlds when not into the throttle? What kind of mpg do you get on your 1 jz swaps?

Default swap

Also what is a fair price for this setup? I found one in canada for 1000 for engine trans, ecu etc, same setup in the us for $1900 shipped. The canada one best i have found so far has been $500 to ship. These are both auto setups, vvti motors. There aren't many of the vvti motors around, plenty of older models. What are the advantages of the vvti?

Thanks in advance.

Unsure of vvti advantages, but my typical MPG when i dont drive like a madman spooling on every stoplight, is almost 25mpg.

Auto if im not mistaken auto gets better MPG, the cruising rpm on the highway is lower. Plus auto is really fun with turbo, no lag

IMO the 1JZ VVTi is the go, any SC3 from 96 onwards should get that motor as that's how Toyota released them in Japan (personal opinion but anyway...). The VVTi motor also has a different torque curve compared to the older 1JZ and feels more linear than the older spec (which I used to have as well) giving it a more lively low-mid end drive too. Fuel economy between the two isn't too much of a comparison, for some reason I kept getting horrible consumption from my old motor compared to this one (my new 1JZ does about 9km/L in city driving, whatever that equals in MPG).

Excuse the dirty engine bay

Around town i get 18ish mpg, highway going 80 (anything over 85 builds boost and kills mpg), i can get well over 23mpg. Bone stock 1JZ, no electronics.

Gotta love a proper and ohm tested wire extension
