Talking Man I REALLY killed my ALT this time.

Usually the story is we have a power steering leak and the regulator shorts out and blows the alt. I WISH I would have been that lucky.

The tally for this one is pretty deep..... I blew one of the rack and pinion high pressure hoses on the bottom of the PS pump and it soaked the alt in fluid. I can drive without PS for a few days, no biggie...........

WRONG. As I drove, the PS fluid washed the grease out of the bearings in the alt and the bearings seized, then they heated up and ground down metal to metal on the alt shaft, THEN the alt case where the bearings USED to be grinded the alt shaft all the way down to the copper core of the shaft as it turned around and around.

Total tally is one non rebuildable alt, one high pressure rack hose, and a tow bill.

wow.
its a good thing the sc3 PS pump is on the other end...ive been leaking PS fluid from a little hole in my high pressure hose forever. i just top it off. I think in what ive spent on topoff fluid i could have bought a couple of those stupid hi pressure hose.

I just parked it and am looking for the best price on one. I have just finished building a race tranny for my Vette and had to do some routine maintenance to the BImmer.... right now saving a few bucks would help. I've been driving the other SC........ man that's handy

You are gonna love this...........

I am at the alternator shop today getting everything checked out since I decided to see what we could do with the old case. He grabs an Infiniti alternator, slides the armature out, and it drops right in the Lexus case. put's it back together and I put it on........ Works better than new.

That's pretty sweet that the Infiniti armature worked - wonder if they are manufactured by the same company?
