To everyone with an SC400 that sounds like there's a grinding when accelerating from a stop, read on.
It was suggested to me that the problem might be a loose heat shield over one of the catalytic convertors. Today I took my car to a shop to have the brakes checked, and while it was on the lift, I had the heat shields checked as well. As it turns out, the lower heat shield over the right/rear cat was loose. The shop removed the shield and alas, the noise is gone. Now I can leave my windows down and not have to be embarrassed when people hear the car making a grinding sound. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get pictures, but the removal I'm sure was simple enough as the shop didn't even charge me for it. Hopefully this is able to help others with the same problem.

so the brakes had nothing to do with it?....i have a grinding sound when the car goes from a stop....but i know its the e-brake shoes on the inside of the rear discs...i'm going to change all the brakes along with the oil tomorrow....i will tell you if the noise is gone when i'm done and i will put up a price sheet to show you how much money you can save when you do it yourself....i'm not ragging on you cause you took it to a shop i'm just going to see how big of a difference it will make to do it myself instead of taking it to the shop....some people just dont have that kinda time on their hands....
but good job in finding out where the noise was coming from...

That includes the parts and labor. However, they only charged me $3, (yes, three dollars) for labor. The rest was $50 for a Mobil1 oil change, the rear rotors, and upgraded ceramics all around with a lifetime warranty on the parts.

I might have attempted to do the work myself, but I'm not the most mechanically inclined and I had the work done the day before I flew to Mexico for Spring Break, so, time was scarce.
