I know it is done by rotating the distributor; but the serivce manual calls for a special probe to be installed when setting the timing. Is this probe just a jumper?

Any other tricks?

Yes, you bridge to connectors on the ECU tap under the hood. I forget which pins. A paper clip would work fine. It must disable some of the timing advance related components in order to get a truer reading of the actual dwell angle.

Thumbs up ignition timing

take the cap off of the distributer, turn the crank pulley until the tip of the rotor is set at the number one wire (TDC 1) i hope this helps you out.
