1jz vs 2jz vs na-t
I have been following dejacky with his na-t project and daily readings on SF. At first I was going to na-t but then saw the headahces and the price. I then looked at 2jzgte clips and engines but all (i'll admit i haven't looked hard) were JDM spec and saw the issues with fitment. I am now looking at a 1jz but mainly mkiii guys were installing 1jz and they also had their issues such as the very short wireing harness. I would probably stick to an na-t car but seeing as the car 212XXX miles on it i'm afraid once I would install the turbo the engine would just break. Reliability is a concern as I am leaving for college and this is my only car. How much of a headache is the 1jz to put in? The USDM 2jz is more expensive but how difficult is this to install? I know any route will be expensive but, what is the easiest and hopefully cheapest option to achieve my 320-400HP/TQ goal?
OR should I sell my current SC and buy an already turbo'd SC?
P.S. NA is on the table if i can reach these numbers

I would definately rebuild your current motor if you want to go na-t. But I can say that dropping in a 1jz is fairly simple and doesn't cost much. You wont reach your hp goal with the 1jz, without doing some upgrades. Just do some searching and you'll find everything you need to know. GL

what modifications did you have to make to your SC when you dropped your 1jz in? How much did it cost?
what would be involved with rebuilding my current engine, and are there anythings I should focus on with a rebuild, and again...cost? (ballpark)

A rebuild will cost anywhere between $1200-$2000 depending who you go to, just call around and get some quotes.

I have done some research, because I am thinking of swapping as well. I would think that the 1JZ is better for the price. I believe that the stock power is near 280 or more. It is also cheaper and will fit with not too many problems.

4000 grand got me a soarer front half, and replacement parts like gaskets and stuff, a few engine mods and controllers. with all your own labor this price will give you oem quality power. every gauge in my car works oem style, A/c, power steering, cruise control, it all works. I have had no probs at all and my engine bay is clean and quiet. I feel like i got a good deal out of it

Problem w/ NA-T: Your tranny (auto) in NA form will not like being near 400rwhp. Other than that, you can get 400rwhp on an NA-T setup for around 2K (check clubna-t.com) on the low end. But, you're going to have to drop some coin on the built trans, or swap in a soarer unit (but this is still under debate, I am working on getting the solinoid voltage outputs from both NA and soarer ECU's).
1Z - You can get 400rwhp w/ a single setup. You'll drop 1200 or so on the swap, then about 1500 for the single setup. Tranny will (should) hold that w/ proper cooling. Some nuke them before, some later. The swap itself is a no brainer. The stock twins will produce 300rwhp all day long, which is pretty nice for a daily driver/lux car
2JZ - Wiring is going to be your biggest hurdle, along with price. I have a 2JZ-GTE us spec w/ 6spd harness/ecu up for grabs, but expect to drop anywhere from 3K to 5K depending on what you go with (auto equipment is cheaper, JDM cheaper still but with extra wiring involved). There will be some tweaking and rewiring to do the swap. There is a how-to manual for sale (or was) around here somewhere.
All depends on what you want to do.

400 is probably on the high side and at least a year down the road. I would be perfectly happy with 280-300...for about two months.

I was told by a guy that does these swaps from Atlanta that the 2JZ was alot easier to wire up than the 1JZ and that you could use the 1JZ tranny with it. He said count on 25-2800 for the 2jz swap with ecu and harness, another 1200 or so for the r154 soarer tranny, plus other wiring etc, I can expect to spend around 5500 or so to put the supra swap in my sc300 5spd.
