Default W58 with a 350-400whp goal.

Should I take the transmission out, have it cryo treated? Or should I should I find another transmission to handle this much HP. My goals are simple and very low. I dont want a 600whp monster. I am only wanting to lay down around 350-400ish at the wheel.

I hear the W58 can handle it all day long, then I hear others say their breaking point is at 300whp and the input gears shred. Ive read numerous threads on the topic but I wanted to see if any of your views had changed on the W58 or if the HP level had been raised on how much it can actually handle?

Thanks in advance.

Where in VA you at bro? Im around 300hp on a w58 with a 6 puck HPF clutch good for 600 plus hp too bad the W58 will break long before that. I suggest a soarer 154 or the almight V160 6 speed. My goal will be limited to 400 whp until I get a stronger tranny.

I am in Va Beach. The soarer 154 and V160 require fabrication to fit, correct? Wasnt there another transmission that would bolt right up but was hard to locate? I cant seem to remember the name of it.

r154 95+ with extended tail is a direct fit. a r154 91-94 needs lil mods to fit.

The r154 from a 1995+ soarer with the 2.5, correct? What about the W58, has anyone tried cryo treating the gears to see if that helps?

it has been thought about but it depends on how much it would cost.

How much more strength does the cryo treatment give you on metal parts and whats the cost?

I just spoke with a company that is willing to cryo treat the parts of a W58. I just have to let them know when I will be mailing them the parts.

With that being said, I need to know the weakest parts of the W58 besides the input gears? What else is known for failure. If someone can make a list, that would be great. Ill be disassembling the transmission this weekend and sending off the parts for cryoing. I need to know exactly what to send and what is known for failing.

if your in there third gear sucks but then again you might as well do it all... shot peening is always an option too but it can cause the gears to shatter when they fail instead of stripping. check this place out, many f1 teams, hks cars, and toyota uses them to increase durability... http://www.wpctreatment.com/ its pretty cool process as i saw the stickers on some f1 cars at a race and wanted to see what it was, check it out

All my research on cryo treating the w58 has led me to believe that cryo treating our 5 speed w58 transmission is a complete waste of money. It will not help you hold more torque reliably at all. All Cryo does (for our purposes), is SLIGHTLY raise the intial breakdown temperature point of a material..in our case, it raises it by only a few degrees. Useless imho..

All the experienced transmission guys I've talked to tell me the w58's problem is its small size. We need a beefier trans like the R154 or v160 to hold more torque.

If it breaks, buy another one. They are cheap. If you make 400, it's definatly going to break sooner than later though. Mine broke 3 months after the car was turboed, I barely drove the car too..

Well, what are the HP specs of these transmissions? The r154 from a 1995 soarer will hold how much? How much will the v160 hold?

BoostLogic's car is holding ~650rwhp fine on the R154 trans .
