HKS or Titan cam gears???
#16
FYI, the new HKS cam gear is nickel plated and won't eat timing belts. (BTW, your link shows the new gear not the old one).
Also, the old cam gears were more likely to eat timing belts if you left the cam gear plastic cover off. (Yes, that thing actually serves a purpose of keeping dirt and debris away from the timing belt).

HKS three bolt design remains a huge issue to me . Five lug wheels, five bolt cam gears...its a safety margin.
HKS left people out to dry with the faulty product. I've got an issue with that as well.
Scott, those are monster specs for an SC, props out to you.

I never had an issue with the Hks 3bolt design but that being said the teeth did wear down noticeably. One thing Hks has never been known for is a warranty on their products even to their dealers (cam gears to strokers).
I just went with the Titan's to replace my Hks.

Interestingly, I've never had a problem with the old-style HKS cam gear. It does show wear, but it also was on the car when it put down close to 700hp. At full boost the car is into the mid 700s with no issues.

You guys using the Fidanza / Titans....change the friggin bolts to high grade steel, managed to snap one off using a small 10m wrench hand tightening. Had to fish it out of the timing belt assembly with goo on the end of a metal probe, they're not made of steel, check it out with a magnetic. UPGRADE THE BOLTS !!
edit: member supra dr points out that s.s. bolts aren't magnetic, didn't know that.

I've had the HKS cam gears for about 30k and never had a single problem. Next time i guess ill go with Fidanza gears, or Titan if i feel like throwing $50 away. Same deal as the "Titan" crank pulley, just the same as my ATI dampner with a fancy sticker and a bloated price.
good info

I beleave the retaining bolts are stainless steel & therefore are not
magnetic. The old HKS gears do wear on an angle, tapering twords the
engine. The belt won't make full contact on the gear over time & the
belt will weaken & strip.
Best advice, after the cams are degreed in - use green locktite (lowest
holding power) on every adjuster bolt. Due to the low torque spec of the
bolt, they will sometimes rattle loose. (break off/ fall out) The locktite
will keep this from happening.
A recent issue w/ a 5 bolt gear did the same thing. I was not involved w/
degreeing the cams. But a few months later 1 bolt fell out, 2 very loose
& the remaining 2 bolts were bearly snug. The 1 bolt that fell out got wedged
in the timing cover @ the crank & cut a stripe in the belt. Effectively
almost cutting the belt into 2 pieces. The groove in the belt is much deeper
than it appears in the pic. If you look @ the exhaust gear/ 11 o'clock you'll
see the missing bolt.
