Interstingly, the Z in 1UZ-FE means that the engine was originally designed with the intent of supercharging. The U is for low emissions, the F is for the fuel economy of the DOHC (quad cam in the V8 case), and the E is for electronic fuel injection.
UZ is just the family designation.
