sounds like it was 02 sensors. Even though, the CEL doesn't come on sometimes, they can still be on the verge off going bad. I had mines replaced even though I didn't have a CEL. Figured 150k on the original sets were bound to be on the edge of failing.

The corrosion under the top ignition coil was causing poor drivability and terrible gas mileage under all conditions (idle, part throttle, full throttle). After cleaning the corrosion the car ran fine when warming up and under full throttle, but ran poorly at idle and low and medium throttle once it was warmed up.
The cap and rotor didn't really help. The oxygen sensors made the car run normal all the time.

check all of your grounds, it is common to get a car back from body repair not running correctly, mostly due to the use of fiberglass and bondo, this causes problems with your grounds. and one little ground can cause your car to run like crap, or not run at all, so i would go ahead and check them! it can also cause sensors to read bad, and cause them to fail. and may cause electrollisis and corroding in sensitive components!
