Crank pulley bolt- how do I remove this thing?
As the title says, I'm having trouble removing the crank pulley bolt. According to the manual, it's torqued to 239 ft-lbs
The head is off the car, and the bottom end of the motor is securely attached to an engine stand. I tried an impact gun, but it did no good. I tried another impact gun (supposedly rated to 400 or 600 ft lbs or something)- the bolt wouldn't budge.
Maybe I'll just go buy a 3/4" impact gun with a 3/4" 22mm socket, use it, then return it
Any suggestions?
Thanks guys,
Allen

A chain wrench http://www.shop.com/op/~CAL_VAN_TOOL...147?sourceid=3 and a impact gun followed by a big *** breaker bar. Came off easily for me on my engine stand.

I used a 6 foot pipe attached to a breaker bar, and wedged a 1/4" thick plate of steel between a flywheel bolt and the engine stand- after trying to break the crank bolt free, the damn flywheel bolt twisted and ruined a couple threads on the crank. Failure.
I soaked the bolt in liquid wrench last night. I guess I'll make another attempt later this afternoon. once that annoying bolt is removed, the timing belt, water pump, and tensioner will all be replaced- and everything can be put back together.
I'll try it again. If this doesnt work, I guess I'll simply buy a 3/4" impact gun and use that.
239 ft lbs- not cool

We haven't put any good torque on it yet with the 6 foot pipe on a breaker; because we are having trouble getting the engine to not turn. Ideas? I was thinking that we'll have to make some sort of plate that bolts to the crank.

put a grade 8 bolt in one of the threaded holes jam a flat head breaker bar into the teeth of the flywheel and have it lean against the bolt go to town on the front side take a sip of beer repeat. btw u did lubricate the be-jesus out of it didnt ya?

Wow I didnt know it was that tough. I was going to put a UR crank pulley on my brother's SC and the way I was going to go about it was to just use a big ratchet wrench and a breaker bar and then stand on the breaker bar until it breaks loose. That bolt is torqued at 238lbs and I weight 200lbs. =(

Leverage: that's why we are using a 6ft bar.
However, it is a matter of preventing it from turning. I'll see if putting the FW back on gives us a better way to hold it.

everyone wanna know how i do it? first off you need some sort of crank lock. using something on the flywheel sucks, because is usually falls off. what i used is a sparkplug piston lock, it cost 12 bucks from my snap-on dealer it screws into the # 1 sparkplug hole and stops the piston and crank from turning its got a brass tip so you wont damage the piston. then all i do is use my snapon 3 foot breaker bar to get the bolt loose. you use the piston lock the same way when you are torquing the crank bolt.
here's the link to snap on, no pics though

well it wont help you now but for future reference, you can have the car on the ground, using a 3/4 wrench and breaker bar, place the wrench in the loosening position with the breaker bar attached and resting on the ground (cement or garage floor ofcourse!!) go inside the car and bump the ignition as if you were attempting to start it and IT WILL COME LOOSE.

HAhaa you have a virgin....
Heat the bolt w/ a real torch & whack it w/ a 3/4" gun.
I've tried every stinking pulley holder tool (have the snap-on one
too) there is. The snap-on one holds the crank pulley while you turn
the crank bolt. The extreme bolts will wobble the key way in the
crank w/ this tool. Which means you now need to CAREFULY file
the crank down to repair the damage.
Trust me I might have done a few of these.
