Default How long can a timing belt last?

247K miles on the odometer so far. First timing belt change was done 120K. Next time I do the belt, I'm going to be doing the water pump, idler, pulleys, seals, etc.

In the mean time, I've spent the money I would have spent on the last belt on complete trans flush with type IV every 30K miles, radiator fluid every 2 years, spark plugs, rotors, caps, etc.

But at 127K miles on the current belt, just how long can a timing belt last? Should I find out? It's a 95, so it's an NI engine.

Im gonna go out on a limb and say you should probably change it soon. The first belt is suppose to be replaced after 90k miles, I know they can last a good while longer, but 90k mile intervals would prolly be safe.

And by safe you mean not getting stranded? I've never exceeded 60K on my Nissans because their engines (300ZXTT) will be destroyed from a broken timing belt.

A timing belt should last up to 150k miles under normal circumstances. does your engine have vvti? if yes, then don't take chances and just change out your timing belt every 90k miles. VVT-i = interference, means pistons smash into valves when the belt snaps, which is more costly than changing your belt early.

Nope, it's a 95 plus all of the mileage is 99% freeway (2 hour commute each way during non rush hour traffic).

184,000 miles on mine. Just did a major service and I was told it was the original belt. It had some cracks and such, probably could have lasted longer.

This should help:

I would buy a service manual too if I was going to be working on my own car.

Any miles beyond 100,000 is on borrowed time...But many pass that severely...Just shows the quality of the belts today, especially the Toyota belts. I would not use an aftermarket belt...IMHO, they are never as good as OEM.

Get the Power Enterprise Timing Belt. They are Kevlar coated and a lot stronger and last longer than the stock ones.

I enjoyed some of this topic on a thread interference/non interference re: the RX300. A great suggestion was made that I create a Lexus driver account. I was able to learn my timing belt and water pump were replaced less than 41K ago. Yes that was 6 years ago so it could be bad but it would still be unlikely. My mechanic said he heard it he didn’t see it so I am going to pass on his recommendation. I would still like to know whether I will coast to a stop, implode in some scary manner or risk life and limb if the timing belt is bad. On the one hand I only paid $750 for my dear old car so I can afford some repairs. On the other hand, he wants $950 to replace the timing belt and water pump so I am essentially totalled.
