pricey is not an option right now.
so i guess the solution is to go with the exhaust now but smaller piping and then save up for a swap later.
right now i'm gonna work on mostly aesthetic things i presume. maybe some supsension upgrades and a body kit.
any link though for where to get these cheap cats at?

FI on the 1UZ is sweet indeed, but it is damn expensive. In anticipation of FI, I am going to go through a M/T swap once the summer is over. I could have a 1JZ w/R154 front cut shipped to my door for the same price.

the cheapest power is by far via a 1JZ swap. Once you have that engine installed, every $100 you put into the engine gives you instant feedback.

if its cheaper and gives more results per dollar spent then i'd be more willing to go with that. not to mention the 1JZ actually came with the car as opposed to the 2jz-gte
i'm looking to make 500-600 whp LONG run
and is it legal to put a JDM motor in a US car?

there has been constant debate between 2JZ and 1JZ on here i have observed, but can the 1JZ hold its own with the 2JZ?

Ultimately, the 2JZ offers more power potential. The 2JZ can keep a pretty nice power band with a 67mm turbo. A 1JZ is a dyno queen with something that big. 61-63mm is the ideal size for the 1JZ as you can put down 450+whp and hit full boost at or before 4000rpm.
If you put the difference in cost between a 1JZ and a 2JZ directly into the 1JZ, you would have more power than the stock 2JZ. While the 2JZ offers more potential, the 1JZ gets you to your 450whp quicker and cheaper.
If I were you, I would get a 1JZ, single manifold, 61-63mm turbo, front mounted intercooler, cams, and engine management. A decent tune will milk 450whp with such a set-up. If you get a Soarer front cut with an R154, you will have one hell of a sports car on your hands.

The 1JZ with 0.5L less displacement is naturally handicapped to the 2JZ. However, this handicap really only surfaces at around 500whp where the 1JZ's power band gets narrow and the 2JZ's power band remains fat. That being said, the true 1JZ enthusiast can run aggressive cams, upgraded valve springs, and a standalone to rev safely to around 8500rpm, giving the 1JZ another dose of usable power in each gear.
