Default C.L. mem. has ques. about 90 Supra

I own an SC400 , but I was out on business today and ran across an 8/89 Supra Turbo, 5-speed with 141,000 miles on it and a smashed in rear quarter, but still driveable for $1800.00 I here the sc300 guys talk about 1jz 2lz gte motors and the like, but really didnt know which one I was looking at, also is the 5-speed the same as say a 97 sc300. In short, would it be agood fixer upper, or a waist of time. The body was straight with no rust ex. for that bad quarter, interior decent, paint good.

it might be the 7mgte motor, and more than likely is, so you wont really be able to use it. if its a 1jz, you still will need the soarer wiring harness and rear sump oil pan

Yeah I was thinking about just having it around as a 4th. car. It is a 7mgte, dont know how that compares to a 1jz or 2jz or gte motors.

There is no worthy comparison. The 1j and 2j are just vastly superior. Period.

the 7m motor is notorious for HG issues, it's a deal where toyota actually didn't torque them down enough from the factory.

The trans from the 7m turbo motor is the same that's used on the 1jz the R154. The trans on the N/A SCs is the W58 which was also used on the N/A MKIV supras, as well as the N/A MKIII supras (with a different bell housing).

Since you were looking at an 8/89 MKIII you were looking at a good shell for a 1jz swap. 89+ was always easier to do a swap to than 86.5-88

with a metal head gasket, the 7M can take a pounding. Having a longer stroke than the 2JZ, it is that much torque-friendly. A proper turbo selection can yield V8-esque power curves with peak torque at 2800rpm and 350whp/410wtq on the dyno.

Personally, I think the 7M would be an extremely fun engine to tinker with. But, fixing the head gasket oversight from Toyota would be job #1. If I was looking for something to fool around with, I would strongly consider this car.

I had a 90 supra turbo a few months back and loved it. It was quick for what I had in it. I sold it cause of title issues to a guy that converted it into a drag car and he blew the head gasket within 2 days.

They are fun cars, you can just go out and beat on it. I didnt blow the head gasket cause when I drove it, it was BONE STOCK.
