please tell me about VVT-i
What year did the variable valve technology emerge?
Would a 92 SC400 have VVT? with no "i" but VVT nonetheless?
Please tell me what you can about the SC400's engine?
I am going to get an SC400 tomorrow, and I am under the assumption that the car salesman told me it had VVT-i but thought that came out later....
Thanks for your time,
Dustin Reichert

No vvti on the 1992 SC400... Its just a straight 32valve 4.0 liter V-8 w/ 4 cams and claimed 250hp. Has two distributor arrangement, not distributorless. VVTI appeared on the 98 LS and GS400. Not sure what year the SC V-8 got VVTI, but it was 98 or after.
With an automatic, the 92 SC400 puts down around 175rwhp, hits 60 mph in mid 6 seconds if properly maintained.
As with any older car, there are problems, but look for a few key points on the SC...
1. Torque convertor flutter. These are known to fail. manifests itself as a rough chattery engagement after the overdrive upshift at 40mph to 50mph while gently accelerating. If the convertor is good, it will be buttery smooth.
2. Headlights leak... Expensive to fix or replace. Look for moisture or discoloring.
3. Dash needles go out. Not exactly cheap to fix, although there are replacement parts available.
4. Look for door linkage problems... Long heavy doors strain the links and fail.

Scott, your right, it's 98-up for the VVT-i. I've got a bit of that converter flutter right now, my local dealer claims he can't even feel it, even when I showed him over and over, of course, so i'll probably have Paisley do the install. If I can throw my .02 in, Austin, also check the rear control arm bushings, power steering pump and alternator, water pump, and heater control valve. These are great automobiles, enjoy your new toy. Scott, Happy New Year, where's those 2002 timeslips? Waitin' to see some solid 11's bro, I can smell the airplane fuel now.....

Lex Luthor...love the name...do you have any side pics of your car - i'd like to see your wheels. The car looks great!
I've got some pics of the the Lexus 4.0 V8 to give you a little illustration. Below, in this post, is 4.0 V8 with two pictures of the VVT-i mechanism, the second picture being a cutaway.

Dustin, did you buy that car from SW at Elite today?
If so, you're lucky, as that is a great car that I almost bought (It used to be one of his personal cars). If I didn't already have two SC's I would have snatched it up at that price!
Very nice, clean car!

RX, the wheels are made by ACE, their manufacturing is a couple of towns over from my company's facility in Modena, Italy. They make a nice, fairly light wheel, in some good offsets, and their quality control is supposed to be great, though I haven't seen the factory myself yet. I bought them from Precision Installations, they're New York's only Racing Hart authorized dealer. according to Dazz.
RX, I look at that cutaway, I see 6-bolt press-in mains, forged reciprocating assembly, big ol' oil pickup, nice webbed block, it just begs for juice. Speaking of which, Clint, did you put the hit on the '97 yet? I'm interested to see just how much spray the 2JZ and 1UZ motors can take, as far as I know Todd Matsubura has run the most on a 1UZ motor, just waiting for a bit more data before I plumb my system. Happy New Year, and i'll tell you the same thing I said to Scott Hureau, where's those 2002 timeslips?

***The head lights can be fixed easily.. I and others fixed the headlights in an afternoon(about 1 1/2 hours on one side...). Saves a lot of $$$
***Dash needles are an ongoing problem as the cars get older... I have a flickering fuel needle now that needs to be replaced...
***As Lex said check the power steering pump for leaks...
Enjoy the BEST sports coupe in the world the SC4....
