The code that showed up was for Solenoid #2 (code number 72 I think) . I tried to do some research on it and saw on a Toyota Service Manual (not sure if it applies to all models) that Solenoids 1 & 2 controls gear shifting and I noticed that sometimes in first gear the engine will rev up to past 3-4K RPM before shifting to 2nd. It says that if either one fails that the other one will serve a back-up function.
I'm wondering if this is applicable to our cars and if so
1.) How long can I go before fixing it?
2.) What are the potential complications from not getting it repaired soon;can I live with it for now without worrying about something worse happening?
3.) What are my options for getting this fixed and potentially how much $$$? (Would I have to repair, rebuild, or replace tranny)
Thanks guys for any input.

thats the same thing my car does

Your car is an OBD1 ? It wont take you more than 5 minutes......It will probably take you more time to find a paperclip...

#2 speed sensor is noted as the overdrive speed sensor on the tranny.... I'm ordering one from Lexus for $110... is it something I can just jack the car up, and swap out or what? Plus my O/D light isn't on or flashing anymore.... does that mean everything's fine now or what?

Have a bit of a similar problem, first got a check engine light, checked that out to be a code 17 (CMP No.1) reset the code then after about 30 miles of driving came back on and then went off. Shortly after got the flashing O/D light, if I take the car into autozone/checkers will they be able to tell me exactly what the problem is?

Default Over drive not engaging.

transmission is acting up on my 1992 sc300
just recently i lost 4th gear the tranny just wont shift into 4th (O/D)
some time it will shift into 4th but a few seconds later it will kick back into 3rd

im thinking sensor going bad but i dont know which one
and i dont know what the two sensors on the tail end of the tranny are called. so i cant get diag procedures for them.

probably a bad solenoid .Diagnose the tranny by connecting te1 and e1 if i remember right those are the two pins you bridge with a paperclip
