Well that is not the ONLY cause, but it is one of the largest reasons. The other is the shift solenoid. Either way it needs to be put on a REAL scanner to see what is up. My Snap On scanner will diagnose the tranny.

O/D light flashing
My SC400 has the same symptom. It indicates an error code 67 from the tranny and this is usually the result of a bad speed sensor. Have it checked by the dealer...it could be just a bad connection on the sensor. They're not too expensive to replace if its bad.
Good luck

this also happened to me two weeks ago, my check engine light came on and then the O/D light started flashing. Next thing you know theres a loud back-fire sound and and its puttin down the road like theres a hole in the exhaust.... Next morning checked it out, the number 2 spark plug blew out. I replaced the plugs and rethreaded the #2 reset the ecu and it was fine after that....

I had the same problem of the O/D light blinking on/off intermittently on my 92SC400. I had a friend who used to work in the Lexus service department and his buddy hooked me up to the scanner. The code that showed up was for Solenoid #2 (code number 72 I think) . I tried to do some research on it and saw on a Toyota Service Manual (not sure if it applies to all models) that Solenoids 1 & 2 controls gear shifting and I noticed that sometimes in first gear the engine will rev up to past 3-4K RPM before shifting to 2nd. It says that if either one fails that the other one will serve a back-up function.
I'm wondering if this is applicable to our cars and if so
1.) How long can I go before fixing it?
2.) What are the potential complications from not getting it repaired soon;can I live with it for now without worrying about something worse happening?
3.) What are my options for getting this fixed and potentially how much $$$? (Would I have to repair, rebuild, or replace tranny)
Thanks guys for any input.
