screeching when turning on?
#16
I had a screech in my 400 with 126,000 on it, and upon removing the serp. belt I spun all of the pulleys to listen to the bearings, and heard that the bearing in the idler pulley was rough. My serp. belt is like new. I havent heard it again until this morning I heard a screech on start-up. I will remove the belt and check the balancer, but Im sure I checked it a couple months ago and it was fine then.

I just went out and removed my serp. belt on my 400, very easy with a 14mm. socket on a 1/2 drive rachet. I grabbed the balancer pulley from both directions and twisted as hard as possible, and there was no flex of the 2 pulley peices. There was also no visible deteriation of the rubber cushion. I spun all other pulleys and all were smooth. I have to beleive if I were to replace a part today it would be the belt tensioner. Also when releaseing the belt tensioner, you should turn CCW.

After all my rechecking, I put it back together, and it had no screech. Seems like it only does it occasionally on my car. If you have screech at all you need to do the prev. checks I suggested.
