HELP! very high idle after TB cleaning

Default HELP! very high idle after TB cleaning

I cleaned my Throttle body today.I just used a rag and the cleaner and I didn't take out the TB.I started it up and the idle is at 1500 and its not going down.I tried to take it for a spin and the car just started jerking then it stalled.

does anybody know what it could be? did I screw something up?

That sounds a little strange. A high idle COULD be because air is getting into the throttle body behind the throttle plate.
1.Did you remove any vacuum hoses or lines? Any vacuum line left off can cause the idle to be affected.

2. Do you hear a high pitched whistling sound under the hood near the throttle body area while running?

3. Do you have a check engine light on the dash?

4. How much carb cleaner did you use? If you only sprayed it on a cloth and cleaned it, then you should be okay. Finally,

5. Did you start the car with the air delivery hose disconnected from the throttle body opening, or only start it after all the lines and hoses were connected again?

Remember, just one vacuum line or big hose can cause high idle. It just doesn't seem likely that a component suddenly went bad, given the information in your message.

I would MAKE SURE all electrical connectors are attached correctly. Make sure you did not disturb the large black TPS connector. Make sure it is pushed all the way back into the TPS if you removed it.

Check your air inlet hose from the air filter. Make sure the MASS AIR sensor connector is pushed all the way down correctly. Hopefully you did not spray any carburetor spray cleaner into the mass air sensor and started it while it was still wet. I have learned not to spray that sensor, but to wipe it out and let it dry before starting.

Please keep in touch, as I am interested in finding out what happened. Our cars are very reliable, and usually if you have a high idle, something was left off somewhere.

I started it up right now and its at 1500-1800 and not going down.I didn't remove any vaccum hoses or lines but I did use alot of carb cleaner.No high pitch noises and all the connectors are plugged in.

This is really scaring me...should I let it run for a bit??

Sounds like it maybe something got clogged from cleaning..

I am still a neophyte on these engines.

But if it was doing this on my nissan. I would say air was leaking into the intake. Like maybe you damaged a gasket. That would make it idle high.

After I verified the gasket was good. I would check things like Idle air control valve. Make usre the throttle cable isnt stuck.

Its weird my car was fine no problems...all of a sudden I do a TB cleaning and its messed.I just took it for a spin again and it keeps on jerking bad

Disconnect the battery or pull the ECU fuse to reset the computer
memory. If that doesn't work the idle air control valve maybe
stuck. Carb cleaner does bad things to electrical sensors &
rubber seals. Last resort, pull the valve & add a few drops of light
weight oil. Try & free manually it up.

The ICV should be able to control your idle, what sounds to be happening is that it is improperly attached. Remove it (2) screws and reattached because it fits only 1 way.

If the gasket on the TB is leaking, wouldn't do it act like it's got the the gas all the way down??

Yes, but he didn't take anything apart. Only cleaned the TB.

what did you mean pull the valve and add few drops of oil? are you talking about the IAC Valve?

Yes, most of the cleaners will remove all the oil film & lock it up. Other
problems that can happen w/ cleaners - Swells rubber seals, can
get into the electrical portion & blow it up.

I never spray any type of cleaner/ solvent directly onto a sensor or
eletromechanical part. Even the cleaners that say "sensor safe".

How I do it:
I use a small brass wire 'toothbrush'. (hardware store .50c) Spray the
brush & shake off the excess. Scrub both sides of the plate & the housing.
Repeat cleaning the brush off w/ the cleaner & scrubbing. When good
enough, dampen a rag w/ cleaner & wipe off remaining residue.
This way there is no liquid cleaner around to contaminate sensors.
