I like the VVTI, but I'm a freak like that.
It is tuned completely from inside the cabin (with the exception of the black box on the shock tower), the VVTI has a few benefits that I like. Ultimately your choice though.

Wow, how do you blow that motor? Anyway, i've HEARD that the VVT-I GTE has weaker rods, so if you're having trouble blowing motors I'd stay away from it. On the flip side, if you were going to build it (stronger rods, pistons, etc.) then I don't think there should be much difference (other than the added complication of the variable valve timing)

both 2jz are jdm swaps there for being used motors. the first one was just not a strong motor. ****ed up my 6th pistion and the vavles above it. 2nd motor was running fine dont know what happin but i spun a rod bearing. so anyone know of any good after maket rebuild kits?

did you do the basic rebuild before putting the engines in the cars? i mean replace timing belt, water pump, tensioner, seals, gaskets, and check the oil pump condition. i always do that when doing a JDM swap. you can get all those parts on the cheap...even original toyota...and prevent further engine problems. but seriously...you must have some horrible luck to blow up 2 gte's.
my buddy blew up about 20 7MGTE's....yeah 20!!!! but those motors are a totally different story compared to a 2jz.
on the first one, if you damaged valves and piston you might have over-revved it and floated a valve.
on the second one, if you spun a bearing it may have been already damaged or the oil pump started to fail.
