Default FINALLY reason for belt ejecting itself

I have been pulling my hair out tryin to figure out why my serpentine belt keeps shootin off my sc400. It would come off at various times...alot of times it would be as soon as I started the car.

I replaced the belt
I replaced the tensioner
I tried a smaller belt

none of those helped and I wanted to sell the car out of disgust.

Well tonight I had a coworker watch the pullies while I started it etc...then I turned on the air and BAM belt shot off. I hear him get all excited he was like "I see it I see it"

the whole compressor moved back about an inch when it was engaged! I turned the car off and we found that the whole compressor was able to be moved back and forth without too much effort.

tomorrow when it's light out I'm gonna take a look and see if there's loose or broken bolts or something. I'm glad to know what's causing the belt to come off now, but I'm curious to see how all 3 bolts for the compressor would have failed or be missing.

Yay! Good thing you found it. It would have been sad to have to sell the car just for something like that.

thanks,

yeah I don't usually overreact to something stupid like that, but it had been screwing w/ my head for like 3 weeks now. Anyway I took a look at it and the top bolt to the compressor was just 'there' hanging. had slid about 3 inches out and wasn't even close to threaded. found the right wrench, torqued it down, problem solved!

YES. I just recently got the car too, and wasn't able to enjoy it knowing it wasn't really driveable. Now when I get in I'm finally enjoying the newness (well however new a 95 can feel)
