Thumbs down engine check light

77k miles got the car last week on the 20th runs great on friday 21st check light came on while i was going home driving slow nice and smooth occasionally puting it in neutral to save some gas and my check engine light came on i got really worried because i bought the car as is no warranty from the dealership and second day this lights on park it next day i check in the morning it still on leave it alone and i come back to the car 2 hours later and the light is off today i was driving home and the light came on i was wondering what could be the problem what do i do? i was thinking something with the gas because both time i had just refilled my gas tank 92 premium chevron no problems full tank toped off shell the light came and when this time costco and the lights currently on please help

You didn't tell me the year of your car so I don't know if you have an OBDI or II.

Just pull the code and see what the trouble code is.

And your next questions is "How do I pull the code."

If you search that question all will be revealed.

assumming the car is OBD1, you can check it by putting a paperclip and connecting port E1 to TE1. If you do a search for "Check engine light" there are a few threads that show you how to read the CEL using this method.

If its OBDII, then take it to AutoZone, they do diagnostic checks for OBDII cars for no charge.

thanks guys yea autozone does the free check. 1999 btw sorry for not including that but today i woke up(730am) the light was still on i babied it all the way to school and parked it at around 1pm i started the car and let it warm up and noticed the engine light went away no the gas cap was on tight i twist it until it clicks a good amount of times thanks again for all your help greatly appreciated

its obd2 so i get it checked at auto zone it was funny thing it turned off after school then on the way to autozone it turned back on and i decided to get some taco bell i ate then started my car and it was off again. haha anyway long story short need a transmission fluid temperature sensor was wondering are these expensive and how hard is installation if its not to hard i wont spend a fortune at the lexus dealership
