Let me see if I understand this, seeing as there is a bit of conflicting information in this thread.

My car:
- '92 SC400

What I need:
- SC300 gated shifter & bezel
- shorten my linkage 1"
- need longer bolts to mount shifter
- tie into pink wire in yellow harness under dash for speed
- on my own for heated seats and traction control switch relocation
- tie into new ECT swtich (direct plug in?)

Shifter positions:
- "D" = 4th w overdrive
- "3" = 3rd w/o overdrive
- "2" = 2nd w/o overdrive
- "L" = 1st w/o overdrive

Does anybody have this setup in an early 400?

So...anyone swapped sc300 gated shifter into early 92-93 sc400 with success?
Wondering if it works fine since I want to get rid of dildomatic...
Thanks CL-!

I also have a 92 SC400 I'd like to improve to the gated shifter pattern.

I am assuming that I must use the SC300 gated shifter and then the wiring is all the same?

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but does cutting the shift linkage by 1 inch and rewelding NEED to be done?

How exactly is it removed anyway? pretty much everything rear of the shifter in the console has to be taken out?

SC300 might be different, I'm not sure.

the shifter link doesn't need to be cut. all you need to do is bend the original bends to create an overall shorter length of 1 inch.

Im so confused …
I have a '97 SC300.
Theres a gated with 3-D, but the one I bought has a 4-D.
According to this thread 4 = Overdrive On, and 3 = Overdrive Off.
Does that mean whenever I drive normally, I should be in 3, not 4-"D"?
It's weird 'cus Overdrive (from the factory) is supposed to be a down-shift into 3rd gear.
I'd rather it remain the same, and have my Overdrive be 3, so I (and anyone else) can drive in "D" like normal.

Also, my Gated Shifter has different buttons than my Dild*-Matic …
E.g. ECT and TRAC are two separate buttons.
On my Gated Shifter, there is no TRAC.
Instead, ECT and "Snow" (which I assume mean's Traction Control) are the same switch.
Does that mean when I press ECT it deactivates "Snow", and vice-versa?
This is so weird.

Lastly, I bought my Gated Shifter from Aliga, and he included an extra plug … What do I do with that?

See Pics (Mine is the Woodgrain Shifter with 4-D … I included the Silver Shifter with 3-D for comparison).

I think the one with the 4-D is from an 98+ SC400 which has 5 gears. 5th is "D" and is overdrive.
All SC300's, even those with gated shifters only have 4 gears where 4th is overdrive. The 98+SC400 was the only SC to get a 5 speed auto.
Maybe it will work fine in D and then 4 will be 3, and off by one all the way down, but that will probably just depend on the length of the rod you use.
It will still shift your car right as long as you have it in the spot it wants, its just an arm moving after all, but you got the wrong type for your car technically speaking.

*sigh SMH …

Im confused with what you're saying though … How can 5 be D, if it's "4-D"?
In other words, 4 and D are the same spot?

1, 2, 3, 4, D. D is the 5th gear or called overdrive. If it was the same thing as 4, it wouldn't be there.

Notice your current one says 1, 2, 3, D. In this type of car D is 4th gear or overdrive.

One transmission has 5 gears and one has 4. It's as simple as that. You have a 5 Spd gated shifter. You can call it D or 5 or whatever but it one more than you are supposed to have. You should have gotten on from an sc300 to match perfect.

… but it's not 1, 2, 3, 4, D.
It's 2-L, 3, 4-D.
They're in the same place, rather than individual gears.
My current one says L, 2, D only.

This is really confusing.
So can I still install it or not?
