Default Remanufactured starter...

I think you got the short end of the stick with your starter.
The workmanship might have been poor on that one.

When I replaced my starter I also used a remanufactured starter. Mind you, I was dealing with the same shop for my alternators and starters in the past so I had faith in their work. 3 years later, my remanufactured starter still starts the car like a champ. Paid only $100 for it too.

My point is that there are shops out there that do quality work all the time, some of the time, and then those that just try to make a quick buck. It's hard to tell unless you've dealt with them before. The need to buy OEM isn't really there IF you're comfortable knowing your reman'd product is good.

It's a shame your reman'd starter was faulty.
Changing the starer in the SC400s are just a PIA.
Hope you get your car running well soon.

I rebuilt my starter completely, new bearings, brushes, contacts and plunger, and clutch assembly and it cost me about $90US at trade cost prices.

Sounds like the pinion was free to float and played out and hit the ring gear on the flex plate. I had this happen on a Mercedes I owned and had to replace the flex plate.

Carefully check the ring gear all the way around and clean up any edges or marks. If that's the only damage you have then you are probably okay to reuse it. Much more then it's worth pulling it and getting a replacement.

Matt.

just wanted to post..

Price wise..

Starter + gaskets cost me about ~$219.37 total for the whole job. n labor was done by me alone n yea.

sure beats paying $1k for labor at the dealership!

my lower intake manifold gasket was full metal, odd that yours is not.
