Default Water Pump Seal Packing Question

The Lexus manual calls for a seal packing when replacing the water pump. The cost of this seal packing is around $50USD which is about half the cost of the pump itself. Any recommendations on whether it's worth it? And anyone know what's so special about this stuff?

PN is 08826-00100 ... for a 94 SC400.

My SC has 155K on it and the front crank seal has started to leak a bit. After reading many threads, I figure I better replace the water pump while I have everything apart.

Did you get your pump through Lexus or aftermarket?

I wonder if the Lexus pump will come with this included.

Just FYI ... of six dealers I contacted, no one has sold this seal packing in the last two years. A lexus tech advised they just use black silicone sealer and didn't know anything about the seal packing even though it's specified in the lexus shop manual.

If anyone has used something other than black silicone in installing the water pump, can you advise? Thanks!

That is the form in place gasket (FIPG) that is used to seal the pump to the block.

The FIPG did not come with a new pump I got from Park Place Lexus.

Permatex Ultra Gray (3-5 bucks I think at most auto stores) has the same spec. FIPG's differ a little on the instructions. Ultra Gray and 08826-00100 FIPG are suppose to be tightened to torque right after applying. Other FIPG's may require it to be tightened hand-tight, then after setting up so long (not sure how many hours depending on temp) tightened down to torque.

The local toyota place carried the FIPG for about 16 or 17 bucks. The $3 tube has held up for years with no problem.

Got the front crank seal for 93 sc4 on Rock Auto for a few bucks and it worked perfectly.

Good luck.

Regards,

Tim

Fantastic - thanks for the info!

I'm replacing just about everything I can (timing belt, water pump, idler pulleys, tensioner, camshaft seals) so I don't have to do this again. This $8 crank seal is turning out to be a $400 project!
