here are pics of the shifter hole in the tunnel. as you can see, i should be able to screw in the forward 2 bolts that hold the shifter in (as the R154 tranny w/ 1jz housing is an inch shorter in length to the 2 pins). good news for me!

removing the shifter itself? if so, the pics in post #16 show the 2 front bolts that need to be removed, as well as 2 additional ones that are covered by the small black boot. then just lift shifter up.

jspecSC3, so which tranny are u installing? the one w/ internal or external shifter? also, which tranny was originally in the car? if ur original was external and now u are installing an internal, your hole will be off and u will need to cut tunnel. same applies if the opposite. from my research, there were 3 type of tunnels used. one for auto, one for internal manual, and another for external manual.

I put a W58 with an external shifter in to replace my auto tranny. Cutting was required for the tunnel. Im installing an internal shifter to replace an auto tranny on my younger brother's SC. If I were doing what you were doing I would think that there would still be some cutting of the tunnel involved which is really no biggy as long as you seal off all the gaps.

pmpdaddyt, no. all jspec is saying is that there is cutting involved, especially if the car was initially an automatic. depending on which tranny, the hole for the manual could be more or less forward compared to the existing hole for the auto.
for my conversion, going from an internal shifter w58 to an internal shifter r154, i'm hoping no cutting is necessary (measurements seem to coincide but i won't know for certain until i actually do the swap).

I thought maybe you can use the W58 shifter lever and housing instead of the discontinued parts blizzy recommended.
(BTW I had those on order for almost two months before they called me and said I was the first order that was discontinued!)
So its established the earlier w58 shifter is the one we want
Also the longer shifter lever from the w58 will bolt directly into the r154 to replace and extend it.
The shifter housing of the w58 will not bolt up correctly to the R154, but can probably be made to mount with bracket or such.
Basically the 92' W58 shifter housing and lever if mounted to the R154 would bring the shifter mounting point back 2 1/8"
Is that the distance we need? if so here would be a new solution, only challenge is mounting the housing (2 bolts line up)

sc1jzgte, so u've tried installing the w58 housing to the r154? and that puts the shifter back 2 1/8"? this won't work because the housing still requires the use of one of the swan neck shifters which would put the shifter **** even further back on the shifter console. if there is a shifter that is straight, then it would pretty much fit perfectly.

sc250tt, I have the two right next to me, but crappy phone camera.
notice the first pic. the 4 bolts to the rear of the tranny, closer to the shifter mount. They are the same distance apart length wise. (the hole to the front is to far forward a tad to work)
But notice the second picture, the w58 is narrower, so if you put the housing on you can bolt it up with 2 bolts on one side, the housing would still cover the opening, but the holes would not match.
So if you used those two holes to bolt it up, and the shifter lever from the w58 (which works) the mounting position for the shifter would be back 2 1/8" and according to craaazy you can use a straight shifter(not swan necked) for that application.
If you just use the early w58 swan neck shifter and the r154 mount, it only needs to move back 1" according to craaazy, and that matches what I measured yesterday also. I think that is the direction I am going, a good welder should be able to handle that.
