i replaced mines with a light weight under drive crank pulley not damped and it cost about 120. if you plan on replacing it with a really good one go with like ati damped pulley those things will never go bad. you know when its bad when it whines when you start up the car it can be your idler pulley or your cranked.
easier way if your alternator isn't charging the car well and the alternator is good yet car keeps dying and you know that battery is good you can thank your harmonic balancer for that....
The best way tp prevent costly repairs is to prevent it from happening. If the inner rubber is cracked, replace it. My crank pully came off while I was driving and broke my fan and shroud and dented my rad. So its best to prevent it from happening.
