Default SC400 custom 2.5 inch exhaust with Magnaflow

Hey guys,

Starting a new thread for these pics since I'm fairly sure a 2.5 inch exhaust setup has not been done like this on an SC400. I made this exhaust myself and had never welded anything before this. The welds are ugly I know, but I'm pretty sure I don't have any leaks.

The mufflers are all straight through Magnaflows, the muffler in the center is a dual in / out tru-x muffler. Rather than expanding / slip fitting or butt welding everything, I bought some 2.5 inch to 2.5 inch couplers. I cut the couplers in half to eliminate the bump in the middle. I then cut my pipes where I needed them and used my modified couplers to connect everything, the pipes within the couplers are pretty much butted to each other. All the mandrel bends are cut from pre bent pipes that I purchased from Columbia Mandrel bending. I painted the rear half black and put the stock tips back on to keep a low profile.

Some notes on the setup.. It sits a bit low but so far I haven't scraped on anything, been over tracks, speed humps, ect. I love the sound, could be a little louder. Very quiet cruisng and idling, gets pretty aggresive under acceloration. No to very little drone. Took almost a tenth off my 1/8 track time.

I'm thinking about making a couple of pipes to come off the center muffler and exit in front of the rear wheels for track use, I have enough leftover pipe.

Let me know what you guys think!

KC

I'll try and get some vid / sound clips soon. My camera, which also takes vids, won't change modes for some reason. Need to find someone to let me borrow one.

Thanks. I'm glad I did it but this is something I'm definately adding to the "things to never do again list". It was a ton of work.

I may have lost a hair of lowend tq. Maybe not lost, maybe just moved higher in the RPM band. Downshifts can be quite scary and the top end is amazing. I've picked up about a tenth of a second in the 1/8 mile.

Yes, wideband. In case you don't know, my car is supercharged. The wideband and the MAFTPro work together to keep my AFR in check while boosting.

yep, i've checked out your previous posts. is there any flex sections in your exhaust? i was always told that there need to be some flex in the exhaust to prevent any cracks.

im diggin' the black painted mufflers. looks very stockish, but im sure you cant hide the whine

Well, it's been awhile since I removed the stock stuff but I'm pretty sure there wasn't any "flex" pipe in it. In my case, I made dang sure the headers bolted to the transmission bracket like stock (required modification to the bracket), this connection should eliminate most, if not all flex on the header flanges. For the header back stuff, I think the hangers should provide adequate flex. In any case, if something were to crack, I'd rather it be after the headers where it's easily fixed.

I need to give the pipes / mufflers another coat, I didn't buy near enough paint. I was actaully intending to paint it all to help keep it from rusting.

The whine is noticeable, mostly at idle, go figure. It's quiet under load and in most cruising conditions. I actually had a guy pull up next to me in traffic and ask me about it the other day. I got the "is that thing turbo charged?" question, always makes me laugh.

So....nobody likes my exhaust? LOL.

I did finally bottom out on the center muffler the other day. First and only time since installed so I'm not worried about it. If worse came to worse, I could move it up a couple of inches.

Planning on my next mod soon. Will start a new thread for it. Should shave at least a tenth or two at the track and cost just a little more than nothing.
