Is your car a turbo? I've heard stories of the turbo spooling up causing heat. If so some heat wrap should do the trick on your downpipe.

maybe your cats are clogged...

Actually, try this experiment. I noticed in my Sc4 that if I run the A/C on fresh air alot of heat comes out from the center console. If I run the A/C on Recircuilate the heat from behind the center console drops alot. I'd probably guess 10 degrees. I only noticed this because I havent made a pocket fit under my new radio, and I can feel the heat differences when I switch from recircu to fresh air.

The catalytic converters run right along that area. What year is your SC400 and how many miles are on it? Mine did the same thing, it was a 93 w/ 150K+ and the cats were in poor shape. I replaced them with high flow magnaflows and no more heat.

Its an sc300. 120000kms. Quite low so I think I scrape the cats a bit, they rattle when I accelerate
