^^ I have one of those SS V3's and I don't think $330 was excessive. Very quality piece and actually an improvement over the old C's design it was based on. But it's only good if you are using a Soarer extension housing or custom custom extension housing of the same length. For very long custom extension housings people use a Beech short shifter which is straight.
OP, from my understanding you should be able to use an aftermarket short shifter designed for a V160 but what I am not clear on (sorry!) is whether or not the useless-to-you pull up reverse function gets in the way or not with a tripod R154. I know this has come up before though. Sorry I can't give you a 100% answer but I do believe this is what is done unless you can locate an R154 tripod specific short throw from Japan.

I'm fairly new and am having some trouble finding info on this, but would the TRD shifter work on an R154 out of an MK3 Supra? Nothing I'm finding confirms that exactly...I'm linked up to a 2JZ so yes I needed an extension. I need a better shifter though as the regular one in my car isn't doing the job.
Help.

No, the TRD short shifter that czar07 mentioned above will not work with an MK3 Supra R154. The TRD #33530-JX000 only works with "tripod"/"late model" R154's.
Even with the required OEM Soarer or fully custom extension housing you have an "early" model R154. Your short shifter options are limited to a vintage C's short shifter (very hard to come by) or the Suprasport V3 (very available). The SS V3 is actually a slightly improved update to the earlier C's short shifter design for early R154's.
Note that the SS V3 short shifter will only work in your car if you use an OEM Soarer extension housing or an extension housing made to that same length (visit Shern's R154 swap thread for measurements). If you have to get one custom made, it will not work with extremely long extensions since it has a "swan" bend just like your OEM SC300 shifter to make up the extra distance to the center opening in the console.

I just came across this thread. Apparently there was a tripod R154 short shifter made in New Zealand for a while. I don't know more than what the thread states:

This is incredibly short on info but for what it's worth here is a thread on SF that came up recently on this subject confirming the V160 tripod shifter doesn't also work in late model tripod R154's:

I have a late model Soarer, tripod R154. This shifter works and is in my car now. You must retain the existing plate from the OEM shifter as this plate does not fit.
