Yes chain wrenches are a god send. Make sure to use an old belt or something in between the crank pulley and the wrench so you don't smash in the little notches on the pulley.

I agree. Most impact wrenches or pneumatic guns will not work. You have to find the crazy ones that are rated at about 500 psi. A couple taps with one of those and that bolt will come right off. Ive done it the starter way, didnt like it. The breaker bar is a pain. But the high PSI rated guns will get into that tight spot and loosen that bolt right up.

I have a very good gun for this. 1000ft lb of torque. Sometime it works with just gunning it. Otherwise theres other tricks. Spray PB blaster into the bolt and try it again. Try it with loosing and then tightening, repeat until out. Make sure use a black long socket for gunning crank bolts. Its all about the weight of the socket. Worst comes to worst heat that sucker up and gun it.

I use this guy:

AIRCAT Model No . 1603
3/4" impact with 1330 ft lbs of torque. Never met a bolt it couldn't break loose (or break off).
Great for the axle nuts as well.

EBAY for the win. It wasn't that bad, they come highly recommended by my snap on guy. Really quite too (like 84-85 db). The bad part is paying for a compressor that will run it right.

200+psi of an air compressore with a 600ft lbs impact gun took it right off with ease.. but i tried a 450ftlb gun wont budge i think 215ish pis is when the bolt on mine ran right off.. you need to take the radiator out if you use a gun..a/c condeser can stay jus dont hit it
