compressor surge is when the air in your IC piping is pushed backwards out through your turbo. it is one of the fastest ways to wear out a turbo.
when your building boost and your throttle body closes, that is when you bov opens. well if your bov doesnt open that air has to go somewhere. so backwards through the compressor wheel it goes.
even though it may sound cool, you do not want that at all....
*edit: yes you will lose power. the rotational mass of your turbo will be lost when the surge is making your wheel stop temporarily in between surges.

Compressor surge isn't as bad as some people lead you to believe there are many variables that play into it. For a lot of High horsepower cars they can't escape it because their tubos produce so much PSI that no BOV setup can vent enough quickly enough.
On a good quality turbo compressor surge will shorten the lifespan but not as drastically as some may think. If fact some D1 cars and other drift cars run turbo set ups without BOVs. I personally never really understood why but I have been told in certain set ups it helps with throttle response.
I in no way would suggest someone do it just for the sound, but if you know what your doing from what i have read some compressor surge can have its benefits

Im not sure but i think they run no blow off valve is because they can get boost faster because the piping is already filled with compressed air when u hit the gas again. But yea its probably not good for your turbo.

so its basically like choosing good response, low life span turbo, and lower horse power over low response, higher life span turbo, and higher horse power? well i guess that sounds right for someone rich who dont mind turbo going out, since that set up sounds better for track usage right?

You can have dose for free!!! Pull the vac line off the factory BOV and there you go, and it's silly loud as well. *
