I'm not understanding something. The 1995+ transmissions had the extended shift assembly to fit our cars. How was it that the earlier ones still fit in the older SC300s? Is it a matter of the length of the I6 motor?
I've been pouring over this thread and the other W58 build to make sure I had everything I needed to put my MKIII tranny in. I'm starting to get paranoid now that it may not fit.

Would I be wrong to assume that the longer goose neck linkage would work for my 1UZ conversion just as well as the external set up?
Edit: Here, I'll make this easy. I hope you don't mind me jacking your thread for a sec Red Phoenix, but I wanna get some definite answers.
This is the tranny I have:
Can anyone verify which model W58 this is, and whether or not it will require the external linkage assembly?
Here's a tranny out of an SC300. Looks to be the same shift linkage that mine has.

ok, if its a sc300 w58, u kno where the tailshaft of the tranny is??
with the black plastic piece is?? where the front driveshaft goes into?? right the part bolted on top of it where the shifter goes, the back of it should be dead even with the black plastic..
if its a mkiii the the back of the piece bolted on the tailshaft that u put the shifter on wont be even with the black plastic piece, it will be shorter...
do u understand?? i will b able to post pics later

RedPhoenix, come do my sc400 vvti 98. I'm seriously thinking about keeping my w58 swap that was originally meant for my totaled 92 sc300, and then the 95 sc300, which I sold for a 98vvti sc400. I wonder how different would it be? I'm sure it will free up more hp to to the wheels. That would be fun but would the w58 handle 300hp and all that torque for daily driving. I know the stock a650e auto handles 450rwhp. And with the tranny off I can also replace the stock manifold for my imf headers.

Correctons: I'm wrong! Your shifter does look like the goose neck design, so should be off of a 92-94sc300.

"My best run with the auto was 16.00@86mph flat with .894 RA, 3.27 60ft and best with this set up was 15.3@92 with .341 RA, 2.48 60ft. I made it fine there and back didnt break anything so thats a plus."

Redphoenix..
I'm using the exact tranny as the one pictured above this post. It was off of a 95sc300 5spd. Now my question is do I still need a tranny adaptor plate/or bell housing to get this onto my vvti sc400? My auto tranny holds 450rwhp, and I'm pretty sure w58 is right around 350rwhp before it pops, but it's so much more fun driving a stick. Lastly, how much more work is it to install a r154 when the w58 pops?
Corrections: it's off the 92-94 sc300 which has the goose neck shifter design replacing the use of an extended shifter tripod.

Regardless you still NEED the adapter plate to make it work.
W58 will last above 400whp if the tranny is in good condition... However with all these used W58's out there, its a gamble.
He is making a R154 adapter soon that is a little unique. We will see how it works, but I think I will be testing it over the next few months. The R154 adaption is a little more involved, cant get into it now (finals week!).
Driveshaft - just use the W58 driveshaft from the SC300
Thats all I can think of now.

As far as I can tell that bellhousing WILL work with the adapter plate. It should but I am not 110% sure. However... if it does not you can simple get a 92-97 1uz bellhousing and that WILL bolt onto the VVTI models.

Rite on redp. I think it would be better if they would create an adapter plate to use with the w58 bellhousing to mate up to the 1uz, instead using the stock auto bellhousing. This would save me a lot more money because I can keep the folk and use the existing slave cylinder to push it.
Unfortunately there are a few reasons behind this.
1) Allows the use of ANY W5x series transmission regardless of what vehicle/engine it came from. That means the W55 from the 22R can be bolted to a 1uz, W58 of a 2jz to a 1uz, W58 of a 5mge to a 1uz... etc....
2) Adapter plate that FURTHER extends the bellhousing limits the input shaft length that seats inside the crankshaft/pilot bearing. How this works is that the length of the adapter plate + 1uz auto bellhousing = stock length of all W5x series bellhousings. This allows stock driveshafts to be used along with using the proper size bellhousing length to input shaft ratio.
3) Starter location. Since the starter is dead center in the V banks on the 1uz, where is the hump for the starter on the W5x series transmissions? Everywhere but the center. You would be cutting the bellhousing a lot to make this work... This is the only reason I don't like the V160 adaption to the 1uz... a reason why I want to do a T56 (removable bellhousing).
Hope this makes sense... Plus the price difference is minimal... Howe bearing = $160....
