and gangrene looks like it sucks

You got really lucky with your finger. I was not. The same thing happened to a friend of mine as well. He got lucky - his finger looked a little more worse than yours, but he needed stitches.
I would recommend that whenever you're working on your car, if you don't really need the engine running, turn the car off.
